Map upgrades will definitely not be free as they are not managed by KIA. The company that is doing the Maps is mapnsoft.com.

Here is the response I got after contacting them:

hank you for contacting the M&Soft Map Center.

Currently we are awaiting for Kia Motors to launch a map update program for all applicable Kia vehicles.

Once the map update is available for your vehicle, all relevant information will be shown on our website.

Map updates will be available through our website, and through the dealer.

The price is still yet to be determined as the map update is not yet currently available.

But the estimate of the MSRP is $199 at this time.

---Also be aware the $199 MSRP is for the maps only. Will likely be a dealer install as according to the tech Service bulletin, it takes 90 minutes to load and needs to be connected to a charging system to maintain constant battery charge. There will likely be a dealer install fee.

Mapnsoft does have some upgrades for other vehicles available on USB for users to self install and they charge an additional $100 deposit for the USB stick. This is refunded if it is returned. I called and was told that this option is not currently available for the sorento.

Wow. That sounds steep to me, especially considering that I've not been impressed by their maps or point-of-interest searches whatsoever. This nav unit has led me on more wild goose chases than I care to count, and is MUCH less accurate than the FREE TeleNav program I have on my Palm Pre through Sprint.

Still, I'm glad I managed to squeak out a free upgrade from my dealership. At least I'll know for next time that it's not worth it.

Does anyone have a copy of the original service bulletin and when it came out? Kiatechinfo.com currently shows OCT 2010 as bulletin date.

My SX was manufactured on 8/13 and we took delivery on 9/18. According to the bulletin, I think it should have had the map update before we took delivery. It have version 2.0xx.xx. Of course if the bulletin really didn't come out until Oct, I doubt I'll have a case at the dealership.

Huh! You think they changed it? I'll look into it and let you know. Also: I wanna see pics of that black SX! Makes sure to post it in the pictures thread -- no one's posted a black SX yet!

My Sorento SX was manufactured 9/10. I purchased it and took delivery on Oct 6th. It has the older 2.xx maps. I saw the tech bulletin 3 days after I purchased it. Took it in and the dealer attempted to install the map upgrade. It would not allow the install because it was not listed as currently in dealer stock. They gave me the screen shot of the install process and error it provided and recommend I contact KIA HQs to have them authorize the upgrade and add my VIN to the list.

Contacted KIA HQ and after 2 weeks of going back and forth was basically told to pound sand. The upgrade is only for vehicles currently in stock and even though it should have been upgraded prior to my purchasing it as the tech bulletin was already out, it was to late to add my vehicle to the approved VIN list.

WOW. That SUCKS! I feel rather guilty that my dealer applied this update to our SX. Again, I repeat that the update didn't help matters very much. The nav unit is still not all that reliable.

I put in a complaint to Kia corporate about 2 months ago on this issue. They called me multiple times to say they were working on it. They called me again yesterday and said it had been approved to get me the update plus they are giving me compensation for my troubles. Not sure what that means but they are supposed call me back next week and discuss the compensation with me and schedule the nav update.

NICE Bwee.... I have and hope to have a similar situation. I placed a complaint back in November and they called me back last week to tell me they were still working on it as it is a VIN issue but hope to have it resolved soon.

I have to say, at the end of the day, Kia's customer service is fantastic. The follow up is unbeatable. I am so glad I own my Kia.

Yeah I am pretty impressed with the corp customer service. My dealer (and the other 3 I have been too in TX plus 2 more in WA) leave me very unimpressed with their customer service and repair work. I think Kia is a great company with a great product, I think their dealer network(at least in the USA) downright sucks and needs help badly.
