Default down hill assist

Has anyone used this feature...I tried it out and it made a awful noise, I was wondering if this was normal?

That's normal. The noise you heard was the ABS pump running to provide brake pressure to the wheels to slow them down.

I donít see the need of this here in the UK

With most cars on the road in the UK being manual and not automatic gears, driving instructors always talked us to use the gears (engine braking) to slows cars down when going down steep hills i.e. shifting
from 5th gear to 4th gear 3rd gear to slow the car down without over heating the brakes

I did try the downhill assist in Lincoln UK and itís strange taking both your feet of the pedals and will take a little getting used to

I don't think people 'need' it anywhere. I think that it was a quick and easy software trick for them to do with the abs/tcs/esc. The real utility of it that I see is, for example, you're at the top of a steep muddy/icy hill/driveway. Hit the button, let the software do it's thing keeping the vehicle going 5mph, all you have to do is steer. Where I live, I can see that being a couple times a year occurrence.

I really want to try it out now! Sounds pretty cool. Not sure how often it would be needed, do you think it is more of a marketing concept than needed function? Either way...can't hurt to have it.

The vehicle I just got out of loved to roll backwards on inclines. This would be an issue when towing a boat or just sitting at a stoplight, reminded me of driving the old isuzu amigo stick shift! I don't know if our Sories have something to keep them from rolling backwards, but I have not had that sensation in this new Kia!

I think it's a neat function that was easy to implement via a simple software program. As for the not rolling downhill, that's another side of the system called hill ascent control or some such. If the vehicle senses that it's facing uphill, it'll keep the brake on for a second or so after you remove your foot to keep the vehicle from rolling backwards.

I couldn't find any Kia specific ones, but do a search for "hill descent control" on YouTube. There's a couple good videos showing the Volvo and BMW variations.

So I got a chance to use the feature today....in the mall parking garage, hahaha. It was actually a pretty neat feature though. I think its really for crawling down hills at under 10 mph. Still trying to decide when I could use it but it is neat to hear the abs work so hard to slow the car.

Also, the brake pump seems more "touchy" in this mode and you barely have to tap it to stop the car, almost like its ability is hydraulically "boosted."
