My theory is that KIA puts the same wiring harness in all of their cars and then adds the optional features as needed. This makes sense manufacturing wise because they only have to make one harness for each model. If you look around you will probably find other "mystery plugs" that seem to have no function.

you may be right, mu uncle who is pretty knowledgeable in cars told me something.

I asked him how hard would it be to add power seats to my car.

He told me it would not be that big of a problem, all the wiring connections are already there if you look under the carpet all you need is the seats and you plug them in.

that is what he said, i never looked but you and he might just be correct.

by your answer you just brought that back to my memory.

may not be truth... since there was a case when someone wanted to add fog lights to Rondo LX and there was no harness, while EX has it in standard.

hmm, interesting - i would definitely like to have DRL on my Sorento SX. it's really one of the more disappointing things i've learned after purchasing the vehicle, which i otherwise love!!

the main problem i have with the design is that since they did NOT include DRL, i would want to just leave the lights manually "on" - but they also didn't put in any sort of beep that would alert you if you turn off the car and left the lights in the "on" position! most cars have something like that, so for the Sorento to have neither DRL or any alert that your lights have been left on seems quite shortsighted on their part...

I can't speak for the SX, but on the LX the lights turn off automatically after a minute or so that the car has been shut off. The manual gives all the details (e.g. I think the driver door must be opened and closed for the timer to kick in).

yes, that's the case if you leave it on Automatic - but if you turn it them on manually (which i sometimes have to do when raining as we have a "wipers on = lights on" law), the main lights go off when you turn off the car but the parking lights remain on indefinitely. is that the case with the LX as well, or do ALL lights go off automatically no matter how they were turned on once the car is off? my '99 Taurus had DRL so i was just surprised that a 2011 car would not...

DRL is not mandatory in US as it is in CAN. For some manufacturers it was easier to make the same model for both CAN and US market, but till CAN required immobilizers... since then CAN and US have different cars; therefore, KIA did not think it would be "cheap" to add DRL to US models. As well other manufacturers. It may have a slot for a fuse, some wiring (I doubt this one though)...
As for Rondo - I asked what are the chances to put DRL - almost none, because headlights have different harness (with and without DRL), and I did confirm that with el. diagrams. So I had to get an aftermarket module.
