Has anyone installed a spin on transmission filter? Looking at doing this in the spring just thought I would check here before setting out on this project

Yes, no maintenance... However to change the ATF around every 30,000 Miles will keep the Transmission, Healthy.

Kind Regards.

spin on filter

yeah I know it does not have a spin on filter or a filter in general. Not worried about a leak coming into it. I got a filter base and built hoses at work and installed one on my F250 over 5 years ago with no problem. I tend to hold onto cars for a long time and feel like a filter would be worth the install. I will try to do a write up with part number and manufactures when I do it at the next fluid change.

Yes, you can do that by yourself. However, that would be a simple Drain and Fill, which only takes out around the Half of the total quantity of ATF; You need to measure how much you drained in order to pour same amount of fresh ATF.

This procedure will renew the additives on the old oil, but instead of 30K, it needs to be done at ~ 15K or yearly.

But if you can take your car to an Oil Change Shop, they have two options more than a simple Drain and Fill, they can do a System Flush (Which I don't like nor recommend), also they have a tool to literally "Suck" out more oil.

Remember, that certain amount of ATF will always remain inside, especially on the Turbine; but the more you can take, the better it will be. So using the Suck tool plus drain, will let you fill more amount of fresh ATF on the system.

I just did that recently on a Sorento, see:

If the manufacturer says don't change fluid and don't touch it, why would you? In my experience, transmission flushes tend to cause more problems than they may prevent. Drain and fill, that's a "maybe" option, but is there even a plug and how do you fill it if there's no dip stick tube to fill from??

We service all atf+4 systems at 60k on kias at our dealership.. Just a simple drain and fill is pretty easy. (Note Kia does NOT recommended flushes) drain the fluid, pick up 5 quarts at your dealer. Put all 5 quarts in (using the backside fill plug). Start it up at let it run for 30mins, then take the "check plug" off the side of the pan and let it drain out until you have the stream of fluid come out at a small steady rate. (I do it right until the fluid starts leaning back) I've done hundreds of them, and at 60k the fluid is typically pretty dark.. if I owned one I'd do it once at 60k and 30k there after.

I was referring to all ATF+4 Kia trannys (with no dipstick), The drain is on the bottom (15/16 head bolt), the "check plug" is on the side of the pan, can be removed with a 3/8's drive ratchet or some have (15/16 head), the back fill plug is also a (15/16) plug, Its way in the back On top of the Near the Front Diff on The trans. It's right where a VSS would be (vehicle speed sensor) I'll see if I can find some pics

We owned a 2011 LX AWD i4 ... brand new to 124K then sold.

Ours was dealer serviced every 3K for oil and regularly but we had to beg them to do things like spark plugs, etc.

Transmission would flare randomly from 86K - 112K. Kia could not duplicate under warranty and would not honor out of warranty. A third party warranty our dealer threw in for free at purchase (20year200,000mi) DID cover it once it finally acted up in front of the dealer...it was random, we were also burning through brake lamp switches (6!!!!--Kia reimbursed us for the first 3) but that problem went away with the new tranny (unrelated but ?).

Dealer's advice was go ahead and change the fluid, KIA is seeing failures they now believe the fluid should be changed regularly. We did not change it but when they saw the failed tranny they took out they suggested otherwise to their rep even though KIA didn't cover it.
