Default 05 Sorento EX 3.5L Coolant Leak

My Sorento has a been leaking coolant on and off for about 2 months now.
It is NOT the bottle or the Y pipe, as that is what I checked first.
It will not leak for a couple weeks then blam a spot on the driveway.
It may be the cold weather that makes it leak? I see a tiny drip on the Driver Side of the casting (I believe is the water pump) and a tiny drip on the Timing Cover below the crank.
The TB and pump were both done 2yrs 20K ago.
Any pointers on what and were to check would be appreciated.

Are you under a warranty of any sort? If so, start taking pictures to document the problem.

It took me a total of six trips to two Kia dealers and a call to Kia HQ before they finally fixed a leak from the thermostat housing at the back of the engine. (this was with a whopping 26,000 miles on the pampered vehicle).

Oh, and i had to tell them to put some tracer dye in the coolant to help find the leak - guess they never heard of that or even pressurizing the cooling system. still not sure if they were totally incompetent or just didn't want to deal with it.

funny thing is they keep sending me reminders to come in and have routine services done!

The probably just didn't want to deal with the problem. was told once by a dealership that diagnosing the problem would cost them more money than they would make by implementing the any possible solutions. I can see his point though. Every minute your techs spend diagnosing a problem is a money lost from work they could actually be doing. *shrug* Money is what makes the world go round, right?

yeah - money IS what makes the world go around a lot of the time.

not sure how the dealers get compensated for warranty work but i would think they do get some compensation?

unfortunately for Kia Corp the odds of me buying another Kia (or even recommending anyone else buy one) after this "service" experience are right around zero. and the dealers i went to are delusional if they think i would return to them for routine service.

Well generally speaking, the dealers charge for repairs on a flat rate system. Warranty work, as well as non-warranty work pays by the hour.

Sometimes the number of labor hours KIA will pay for a warranty procedure is less than the number of labor hours they could charge a customer for the same non-warranty procedure. Sometimes KIA will pay the same number of hours, but at a lower rate.

I don't want to go into politics but if you can do a job in 1 hour that you can charge a customer or KIA 2 hours for then you have made money. Otherwise you're losing money.

So that is pretty much why some dealerships hate doing warranty work. Especially if you have a uncommon problem that is not an easy fix.
