I was under impression the plugs were good for 100k (+ -) as per KIA?

Still reading thru some posts on this forum about timing belts just to get an idea on what is involved but looks like it is above what I can do myself for the first time.

Was going to change the plugs myself but now if other items need to be looked at or even replaced while the engine is opened up then will take it to my local mechanic.

Unfortunately one and only KIA dealer here in Brooklyn NY is not very good, still have a few bad memories. Don’t want to turn this post into a different direction, so will end this now about the dealership.

I will read some more on timing belts but most likely will use my local mechanic to do the work.

Thank you nstoolman1!!!

If the local Kia dealer is no good, take it to a Mitsubishi one. The 3.5 is a Mitsubishi design and any Mitsu dealer or specialist would have no trouble with it.

Hello all,

Today is the day I will attempt my first ever spark plug replacement, they are still original plugs with 80,000 miles on them.

One question, any idea on torque to apply when putting back the bolts for throttle body and any other bolts which may have to come off?

I purchased a torque wrench which covers 10-150 lbs.
Do I just do it by hand (normal wrench socket) and when the bolts feel tight just stop?

Thanks guys!

Guys - I need help!

I changed 3 spark plugs on the passenger side ONE at a time last night and all was well, SUV run good.
Today I replaced the driver side 3 plugs ONE by ONE and the SUV started to vibrate\shake violently and keeps stalling
Any idea on what may have went wrong?
Tomorrow I will re-open the driver side and double check the cable connections but any advise from you folks would be helpful.

Thank you,
Vadim.

One bad spark plug out of the 6 new ones I purchased.

So on the second day, I started the car and the engine light turned ON. Which was great because now I attached an ODB II scanner and it showed cylinder #2 misfire. I pulled that plug out, put back one of the old pugs and the car ran fine. Drove to Auto Zone got a replacement plug, now the car is on 6 new plugs!!! Hoping my gas mileage will improve a bit.

Also called A Kia dealership to have Service Campaign SC092 – Fuel Tank Air Filter Replacement done. While the car is there they will also change the Timing Belt, tensioner, water pump and drive belt for a cost of $875 + Tax.

Now I feel like my Sorento will drive another 80,000 miles!

Thank you every one, could not have done the work without your instructions and help.

Vadim.

What kind (brand) of plugs did you buy? KIas do not like "super duper" plugs.
They like NGK and Denso platinum brands... They have problems with strange design plus (like Bosch) and will throw all kinds of CELs.

Auto Zone only had Bosch Iridium/Spark Plugs in stock, part number 9600.

Hello Vadim,

Thumbs up for knowing your limits and taking your vehicle to the dealer for the timing belt. Small suggestion, as your Alternator and Power Steering Belts need to come off to access the Serpentine and Timing Belt plus related items. You may want to have those belts done at the same time if they are still the originals. Just a suggestion as you are already paying for the labour to do the job, it would only be the cost of the belts...

Will do , I will try to have them look over the entire car and tell me what else needs to be replaced. Although at a current cost of around $1000 I don't think I can afford any other fixes right now, maybe in a few months down the road and if I feel they are being honest which I hope they will be as I need a good trustworthy dealership mechanic.

Thanks LittleViking.

Update:

Once again thank you Archilot for instructions and pictures, they really helped with plug changing.

Ok so I made an appointment with Kia service to replace the timing belt, pulley, tensioner, water pump, drive belt.... for Monday morning of this week. During last weekend the engine light came on with P0700, P1121 and another one which I can’t remember but something to do with TCM. Dropped of the car at Kia service and told them to also look into that and fix it.
Timing belt stuff all went OK as far as I can tell and TPS was replaced and reconfigured by Kia service tech along with TB cleaning. I paid my bill $1292 including taxes – don’t start to tell me I over paid, this is pain full enough. Originally they wanted $1600 + Tax, I called other Kia dealers to get a quote and then also called Kia to complain – they said they would look over the bill and contact the service department if something was fishy, long story short the current service department dropped the bill to flat $1292 out the door. Paid my bill and started to drive home, guess what - the car will not shift into 2nd gear, at least not until I bring it up to about 4100 RPM with a hard shift into 2nd. Oddly enough I figured out that if I drive in first gear to 2700 RPM and let go of the gas pedal as soon as RPM drop to about 2400 RPM the car then shifts to 2nd gear - same technic for the rest of the gears. Service department was closing and asked me to drop it off this morning which I did.

Not sure what is going on but I have a bad feeling about this.

Thank you guys and I hope to hear soon from the service department today.

Vadim.
