Default 05 sorento airbag light

hello everyone,

i was hoping someone in here might have the answer to this question. the airbag light came on in my 05 sorento (no biggie right?) but here comes the puzzling part i was hoping for help with.

when sit in drivers seat light stays on. when out of drivers seat, (done this many different times to get an idea) sometimes light come on, sometimes it doesnt.

but the confusing part is when i sit in the passenger seat (driver seat empty), light stays off.

trying to give as much information to the dealership as i can. too many horror stories of them "fishing" even though they have the codes.

any ideas?

thanks for the advice and feedback!

Exclamation Update

This is to update on the airbag light issue i had on my 05 sorento.

please everyone before you have an expensive diagnostics done, ensure that your seatbelt wire is not grounded out!!

this problem caused me to fail state inspection and it was going to run about $100 for diagnostics. i didnt have an issue sending it to for diagnostics, just very difficult to do when work schedule is from 5 am to 9 pm daily. had to get out the ol flashlight and try to find out as much information as possible while using the phone to call dealerships with what i have found and by them scratching their heads and saying that they have never heard of this problem before while telling me to bring it in for diagnostics.

while investigating this issue, i have noticed that the seatbelt wire for the airbag system was grounded out under the seat rail of the drivers side. the position that the wire was placed in from the factory was riding under and between the metal rail on the seat. everytime someone was to adjust the seat for comfort, the rails would grind down the wire insulation to exposed the wires and ground it out causing a faulty reading for your airbag system.

to correct this problem, i had to remove the wire, and extend it a couple of inches while re-routing it to avoid this area. i just used standard gauge speaker wire with crimp connectors and wrapped them up in electrical tape for reinforcement and *WOOHOO* the light goes out.

of course, the dealerships say that this could not have been the issue and i should bring it in anyway to ensure that there were no other problems.

yeah, right service department.

i hope that this helps those that have been trying to "self-diagnose" while saving others a few bucks in the process!

Happy motoring!
