Default P0431 which side is Bank 2, driver or pass??

2003 Sorento
Seems like a simple question and yet I have found conflicting answers that bank 2 is the drivers side and then again it is the passenger side.
Can someone who actually knows for certain tell me which side please.
I am trying to avoid changing the CAT first because of how expensive they are so I am going to change both O2 sensors on the Bank 2 side.
Sooooooooo Bank 2 is which side?
And if anyone has any tips on how to make that job easier I'd appreciate those too.
Thanks in advance

On a Kia Sorento Bank 1 is the passenger side and Bank 2 is the driver side.

Not to start a debate here, but I know without a doubt that Bank 1 is the passenger side, and Bank 2 is the drivers side. Bank 1 has cylinders 1,3,5. Bank 2 has cylinders 2,4,6.

If you have a catalyst efficiency code, don't waste your time/money replacing the sensors. If anything, find a way to graph the O2 sensors and see what they are doing. If a sensor was faulty, there would be a code for it. The sensors are only reading what is given to them, so if the 2nd sensor is saying "bad catalyst", chances are that is what is wrong. Now we have to look into WHY the catalyst failed.

See thats what Im sayin and I believe you though there are some who will chime in the opposite. Bank 2 is the drivers side. Now lets see if someone wants to say definitely its the passenger side.
However I would also say not so fast on condemming the cat and have found believable information to suggest it could be an O2 sensor

Explaining Trouble Codes PO420 - PO421- PO430 - PO431

There are some valid points in that article. I do have an issue with the theory though. These codes are generic codes (the same on any OBD-II vehicle). The codes he mentioned are:

PO401: Insufficient EGR Flow
PO402: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Excessive Flow Detected
PO410: Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction
PO420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
PO421: Warm-Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
PO430: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
PO431: Warm-Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

Looking at a your vehicle specifically... the Sorento doesn't have an EGR valve, or a secondary air injection system.

I am not saying the article is wrong, but I would recommend getting a proper diagnosis before spending money on a guess (whether it be the sensors or the converter). Even if you were to spend $5 on a part that didn't fix it, it's $5 wasted. Check out the website listed in my signature line, all the service info for your vehicle is on there, as well as info for that code. As a hint though, look under a 2006 Sorento instead, code P0430. This will give you a lot more info than if you look under your 2003.

As I mentioned before, if at all possible get the O2 sensors graphed to see what they are doing, this will give you the answer you are looking for.

Default P0431 solved !

Well I spent a lot of time looking/listening to or at a lot of different advice, a whole helluva lot of different advice and after hooking up my laptop with OBDII software and closely looking at the O2 sensor, Bank 1 and Bank 2 I decided to first change the Bank 2 sensor based on what I saw as an erratic signal. Prior to that I either had a P0431 error or one pending in my DTC. With a new Denso direct fit sensor installed ($30) I drove for 50-60 miles while monitoring the DTCs and Monitor Status for the CAT then the CAT monitor went to "Complete" and still no error or errors pending. I drove another 150 miles and no change so I am pretty sure that cured my P0431 error problem and not replacing the catylitic convertor. Now all I have to do is get my Evap Monitor to complete and I can get this bleepin car reinspected and most like sold. Ive had to many problems with this KIA and will most likely never buy a KIA again. But thats just my experience.

Well I'm glad you took the time and researched, finding your answer. Thank you for posting with the solution as well. Many times fellow forum members give advice and never hear anything back about what happened. Where are you located? Here in New York you can have 1 monitor not ready and it will still pass the inspection. Is it different where you are?
