Default DOME LIGHT problem............

i did a search but could not find anything about this so here it is:

it has happened once before - dome light will NOT come on when i open my door or when i hit lock/unlock from my key fob. BUT........the lights work when i hit the "on" button on the same panel. i don't know what is causing this and the last time it just starting working again after a few days. but it drives me crazy when i am out after dark and the lights don't come on in my truck when i go to unlock it!

i wanted to check and see if anyone has had this happen and could tell me what seems to be causing this - before i have to head out to my kia dealership. i like to be armed with some info otherwise i get the "little lady and her truck" attitude.

ah yes the infamous dome light. Well KIA princess other than having the other infamous electronic goblins that live in our soreto's such as headlights going out and radio displays going bonkers esp on the EX models the dome lights are high on the list. A faulty diode was installed at assembly and it blows out after a while. It is a one hour job for the dealer do he can charge you a hefty fee. The diode is hidden within the left side lower kick panel (along side your left leg) located near the fuse box. Have the dealer change it unless you want to do it your self. the part cost less that 5 dollars and is relative easy to do. by the way I have done this a couple of times as the diodes I bought were faulty as well (paid for the first ine and the following 2 were free being under warranty. I have a pdf on how to do this if you want to try it yourself..hciaffaglione@canberra.com

as far as I know yes. Mine had no marking on it to go to an electronics house to buy the part.

Princess there were a great many posts on this. But that is not the point anymore or right now for you. So we will beat the dead horse once more.

DOME LIGHT DIODE TSB was not a RECALL as I recall. Did not get that far or much of a problem to make recall status.
DEALER ONLY suggested as DIY's found out with repeated DIODE's. That is unless they or INDY Auto Electric Shop had a TSB Schematic of work to do. Parts kit 9138A-3E000 was NOT $5 if you buy/bought it. WAS FREE thou on TSB, but doubt that at this late date you will get it done. You can try for sure like always. RECALL's are forever first time FREE, Customer Goodwill is free, TSB's are not free forever. A one time free recall turns into a Dealer Workmanship/Parts warrrenty if it fails again a second time. And face it if the vech made it till 3/36,000 and the diode did not fail, whom is kidding whom. If you and your dealer have a good relationship many will find a way to go with the 5/60 spirit of goodwill with in reason. As you will see below.

Two ways they might do it. Both work and you get back your lights. But one the one I got (TBS FREE) is better and said by dealer to go the extra mile long term no come backs.

The OEM way of things working and how mine a 2004 LX did was that you open door and MAP/DOME/LOWER DOOR LIGHTS all come on. You as well COULD use sitting in vech with door CLOSED! the rehostat (thumbwheel) left side of sterring colume for the DASH lights brightness in one of its farthermost clicked setting to do the same thing. The other clicked setting turned OFF the dash lights for nite STEALTH mode. And when you used the remotes ALL the lights inside and outside flashed and the inside DOME and MAP lights stayed on for a bit and faded out. This was two maps (lft/rht) and two domes (frt/rear)

Version 1) Dealer just fixed diode and everything was normal as stated above. Or so I was lead to be told. Potentcial for come backs is out there and really happens to some here. Should be Workmanship/Parts warrnety. But most are told they pay and buy the BS, hook line and sinker. Right after those that were made to pay in the first place.

Version 2) The one I got and have had fool proof working now. Dealer fixed diode but I now can not use the the rehostat for anything but dash brightness or stealth mode. Will not turn everything on now if clicked. When you open door only the two domes and all lower doors lights come on. Not the maps. When I use remotes or key in door(not sure I never do this to be sure, might be only once you open door with key and pull handle) all outside and DASH and DOME and LOWER DOOR light flash not the MAPS. And then ONLY the two DOME lights front and rear stay on and fade out. The only way I have MAPS is to use the switchs for them in MAP units. And if your sitting in vech with door closed I use the MAPS as interior lights or the Front DOME in addition to that by simply hitting the easy to reach and clickable ON button in that unit as well. It has ON/DOOR/OFF. I like it like this, it works very well and makes perfect sense. And works much like MANY other vechs do. The OEM way it all did before seems almost alien and weird now in retrospect.

Here is what my 2004 LX built 04/04 bought used with 35,119 on it on 09/22/07. And now 4/20/10 with 68,xxx on it has had done free.

Invoice Date 12/10/07 38,778
Labor OP #20ISZ Time OP 0.40 (little under 30 mins)
Part# 9138A-3E000 Diode Kit

I took the dome light housing out and tore it apart to check the soldering joints and I found 2 of the 3 legs were lose so I resoldered them and I have not had any problems for 2 years now. But I did buy a new diode before I tore the housing apart and it is now sitting in the glove box, I'm still using the old diode.
