Default 4LO light, no high gear, no 4x4

Hey guys, great site, got problems with my Sorento. 168000 Mi. I have a 4lo light on solid, I dont have any 4wd at all and my trans doesnt shift to high gear. Took it to the dealership, had it 2 weeks, they put in a 4wd switch in the dash, they put in a solenoid/coil of some sort in the transfer case, they also said they THOUGHT the trans control module was bad. Bought a used one with 59000 on it and installed it myself no change. Here is the kicker the wife picked the car up from the dealer drove it home said the trans shifted all 4 gears, so instead of me just leaving it at that I went ahead and changed the module. Now we are back where we started. So I put the original module back in still messed up. When I changed the module I unhooked the battery. I do all of our auto maintenance and repairs but when it comes to electronic issues i'm an idiot. Taking it back to dealership today, I think they are throwing parts at it till they find it. Has anyone ever run across this situation before? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. These are the things they said they tested. TCU, overdrive switch, trans solenoids, inhibitor switch, stop switch, oil temp sensor, input and output speed sensor,

Are you telling us that the switch is in the 4 high position and the low light is on on the dash...? did you put it into low and it wont come out ?
Only problelms I have seen on here is that to get it out of low you have to be stationary with your foot on the brake and then it will change out of low . Are you sure your wife did not drive it home in low and it changed through the gears ok ?

The switch on the dash can be in any position and the light stays on 4lo. As far as I know the switch has never been turned to 4lo in 7 years. I can drive it and it only shifts 3 times, and no 4wd at all. Is there any vacuum involved with this system?

well it should sift through all the gears in low. the front axle is air pressure operated from a pump in front of the battery......I am not too sure if its in high or low > the warning light is operated by a switch on the rear of the transfer box ... The high low selection is by an electdric motor ....looks a bit like a wiper motor on the back of the transfer box....

Sounds like its in high....the hi/lo switch is stuck on the gearbox ...but your shifting problem sounds more like the gear box /wiring /controller

It's a 2003 - 4 speed auto.

Or am I missing something??

Sorry, that was a mistake on my part. It only shifts twice, starts in 1st, shifts to 2nd, shifts to 3rd,and thats it. At 60 mph tach reads 3500-3700 rpm, with that many miles I dont want to drive it very far reving like that. I changed the transmission control module, no change. It seems the 4lo light and the trans not shifting to 4th have a common problem.

Default same exact issue but still no real fix

After trips to 2 dealers and a new control module and selector switch still no resolve. It is very much related meaning the 2Low light is on but no real 4 wheel drive and the transmission is not shifting to high gear. It very much acts like the overdrive is off.

After the 2nd Dealer (who replaced the control module) had the car for a month I asked if there was any way to make this a 2wd vehicle he found that but permanently jumping the reset pins for the error reset the vehicle is a great running 2wd ride now, shifting is normal. That said if you select any 4 WD mode the 2WD light and no high gear comes right back until you turn the key off and then back on.

Interesting as the original post seems exactly what I have, I’ve been running like this for 9 months and no issues…I just miss the 4WD but with 180k miles and the next “guess” from the dealer being a new transaxle I’ll just ride it till it dies…unless someone here has a fix.

Took the car back to the dealer tues. on the way there I hit a bump in the road and noticed the light had gone out and trans shifted to high gear. Got to the dealership tried the 4wd in the hi position 4lo light came back on. Took the car for a drive around the block hit a few more bumps light goes off, gave them the keys and told them what it did and they still have it. Hope they find something soon.

Got my car back Fri. every thing works fine. This is what they told me they did, they took all the wire connectors apart and cleaned them and sprayed some kind of anti corrosion spray on every one of them, then they went through and regrounded all of the ground wires. They couldn't honestly tell me they found the problem but its working now. Wife is in a better mood and thats worth alot.

You had a short in one of the wires. It is always good when the wife is in a better mood. When mommas not happy, noone is happy.
