Default 2008 Kia Sorento

I had my oil changed at a local dealership (not a Kia dealer) and soon after that the truck started making noises. I took it to the Kia dealer which is 1 1/2 away and the bottom of the truck was coated with oil. They looked and found the oil filter was leaking (that is what I was told). They said you need a special tool to tighten the filter properly. Just wondering if this was true.

I have changed the oil on my 2006 ex 4 times, I tighten the oil filter as hard as I can with my hands. Have never had any oil leaks. I think the person that changed your oil just barely tightened the filter causing the leak.

3.5L spin on old school style on bottom left of front of engine. Nothing special to tighten one on. Spin on till filter base gasket touches oil pump boss/base plate and then 1/2-3/4 turn more to tighten it. No tool. 3.3/3.8L is a drop in paper cartridge on top rear of engine under a screw on cover. My guess is he went to a really cheap lazy place and they either did not clean base on block well before new filter was put on. Or they did not make sure filter gasket on the cheap filters they buy was in its groove on base of filter before it was put on. Or they just plainly did not tighten it through laziness. Would not go back there.

I was going to comment on OIL CHANGE MONKEYS. But then thought that would be disrepectfull to monkeys. You found thou the non KIA dealer in town that hires sub-morons thou. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned in that, taking a 2008 Kia to a Ford/chevy/honda/acura dealer.

Yeah, I do all of my changes on my 07 and you really need to snug the oil filter cover. I hope you didn't do any damage to your motor.Strange noises can't be good. The special tool I use is the small oil filter wrench.Bought mine at local auto parts and it works well. Make sure you ALWAYS change the two rubber seals and ALWAYS check for any leaks after you have finnished. Let the truck run in place and watch carefully for any leaks. Good luck.

IF THEY USED AN AFTERMARKET FILTER SOMETIMES THE HOUSING SEALS ARENT THE GREATEST FIT OR DONT GET CHANGED AT ALL CAUSING LEAKS. SEALS COULD ALSO MAY HAVE NOT BEEN SEATED RIGHT WHEN REPLACING AND BEEN DAMAGED. OR THEY JUST DIDNT TIGHETEN....
