Question key programming

i have been trying for over 2 months to get a new key cut and programmed for my 04 sorento. I have only 1 key left (not the master). the dealer has tried on 4 occasions without success. we have been in contact with kia directly recently and have been advised that the complete lock, key, immobilizer and lock system has to be replaced to get a new set of keys? total cost of about $1000.-to get an additional key!! doesn`t make sense! can anyone help?

No, I think he is talking about a key with immobiliser chip. Different thing altogether. However, I was under the impression that, without the master key, the dealer should still be able to obtain the (master)*ID key code (password) using the kia diagnostic equipment and reprogramme a new key. (but I may be wrong - diesel models don't have the ID key system).

*NB Kia refer to what you (I think) call the 'master' as the ID Key. They refer to the keys that you use everyday as the 'master'. Confusing ain't it!

Instructions are on kiatechinfo.com

"When the customers lost the ID key, new master keys can be registered by using Hi-scan only. ID key can not be corrected and reproduced."

In all fairness, I was not aware that a 2004 like mine (a 2004 USA spec) could have a chipped key. Later ones yes i knew about. Mine does not. Takes my dealer ten mins to cut a OEM key blank and did not need either OEM key to do it. Got key code form KIA online database to key my third jsut to have safety factor key. But we do not know where he is so that might not be the case. I am more curious as to why he only has one dime/street corner store dup of a key left. You get two OEM with vech. Why does someone let it get to the point they have one key that is not OEM blank made. Only times I saw this type of thing when working industry were mostly car thiefs or repo companies. And or legal owners of cars with a somewhat cloudy history. Like wife took car from husband and took off or vise versa to get a divorce. But then I worked for a three letter german. And that factors into the idea that they get the $$ car however they did. And a Kia really would not see this IMHO type of action on keys. But then again ya never know for sure what some one is planning. Parent signs for car for kid and he goes to college or gets kicked out of house and now he is not paying the car payments on time. SO dad thinks he is going to the school/apartment and hiest the car form JR and finds out JR has both keys and he only has a key JR forgot about, that is meant to open the door if you lock your keys in car and needs to get in but not start it and drive it. I would be very slow to help these types here when a dealer can not or has not. Good samaritanes get taken all the time by crooks. That is why All dealers now require photo ID and proof of ownership to the car to cut keys. Or the car was sold to you by that dealer and they know you and you have frequent flier miles there in parts and service. BIG business a few years ago with high end cars and keys getting cut for customers with only a VIN # no questions asked. The crooks counted on the fear of the unknown customer asking for a $150 chipped and lazer cut key to a 2004 S500 or 2000 745iL or thier lesser brothers. Some of these guys that owned these thigns were real AW's in additude. And told you what they thought of you little persons below them in life. In the last five years it has gotten way better. Rule is no Photo ID nor proof of onwership or no frequent flier miles and no key period. We do not know nor care who the hell you think you are. My 2 Cents worth.

They have to do both keys one after the other without stopping the programming after the first key. The new programming write new codes, so the original key will never work unless it is programmed at the same time with the new codes.

Just like he said. Anyone ever stay in a hotel with the new credit card type door key? They are programed at the desk as you check in. If you get two one for you and one for the wife or kids they are coded the same right then. IF you or the kids or wife (they never do this thou) loose a key or go someplace that has a stronge magnetic source like oh say a hospital like I did then one might be deprogramed. And when you return it does not work. SO you go to desk and have it reprogrammed and tehn the firs tkey you later find does not work. Each time they program a key it wipes out the first code. So just like the doors in hotels you must have all keys you wish to use there at the time of program to make them all work now. But he still did nott ell us where he is so I assume he is not USA and that pre 2006 vech could have had a chipped key there. As I was sure that a 2004 like mine and his did not have this feature. Guess EU does then on all 2002 on it seems.

yes Canada. Thanks again for the input.Checked with 2 locksmiths today and both say 04 sorento did not come with chipped keys!!However, only HYUNDAI SANTE FE for 04 models came with this option. When we checked the manuals, the keys that matched mine were Hyundai-very odd.Locksmith is ordering key blank and we will be trying possibly early next week to program the key-he is very confident. I am waiting to hear back from Kia tech tomorrow hopefully to sort this out.very weird?

I am going in Tuesday to the dealer to have another key with remote added to my 2006. I will need to have it changed to a new code as someone stole my other set.
