Default Hard Shifting Out of Park

My wife has a 2008 Sorento, the problem she's having is after the vehecle has sit over night it is very hard to shift out of park, after she shifts it the first time it seems to shift fine untill you let the vehicle sit again for several hours.
It's been to the dealer twice now, 1st time they looked at it, the 2nd time
they sprayed silicone on the shifter. They have no idea whats wrong.
Just hopeing somebody might have an idea what could be causing this.

thanks for the help

Is it a lazy shifter interlock? This is where you must step hard on brake to allow the shifter to release and go into any gear from park. Might be once cold the electric soleniod gets lazy once it sits for a while. Mine has a type of this at times. But it is my fault. It is not a lazy issue it is I am too fast and beat it to the release. I put foot on brake but before the solenoid can release I am trying to push button and move lever and jamming it up for a sec or two. And have to push it back into park and release the button and make sure that I step on brake and then try to push button and move lever and than it will work as designed. It is me I know for sure being too fast for the system more then a lazy one. Maybe this is what you and your wife are seeing?

Or is it the linkage for the trans is stiff? You hear and feel the interlock release and can move shifter a bit but then it gets hard to put it into a gear first time? This will show up sorta like you can get get it into reverse with effort and then when you go to drive it is the same takes effort to move thru neutral and into drive.

Default Hard Shifting Out of Park

Is the driveway she is parking on have an incline? If so make sure she puts it in neutral first then sets the parking prake. Then release the foot brake and put it in park. This will take the stress off the parking pawl in the tranny. If your on a flat driveway then this may not apply but I would try it anyway. Hth.

Glad you said that. I was thinking it, but said naaa too easy and common a thing to miss for someone that has been driving more then two weeks an is older then 16. But your right and dead on, parking prawl might be jamming up due to load.

thanks for the replies, I'm thinking like 04 Sorento beleiving it may be the shifter interlock. Once I shift out of park for the first time, it shifts into all other gears very
easy (like it should shift) also the vehicle sits on a flat area, no incline.
But how do you get ther dealer to change the interlock, they keep saying they need to look at it again, like the 3rd or 4th time now, haven't replaced a thing yet. now they are
trying to tell me that this is normal and may need some time to loosen up.
Go figure every time a dealer can't fix something, they tell you it's normal.

Well yes I have a 04. But my shifter is brand new and about 10,000 miles old? I had the whole shifter replaced four months after I got it sept 07 with 32,000 on it. It went bad at 35,000-42,000 miles. And it has 54,000? now. Bad in that the lights in the shifter went bad and stopped working. The dealer i think tryed to replace them (bulbs) but it did not work? Or they told me that they would replace the whole shifter as teh bulbs were not serviced? I do not reacall which. My shifter was a little loose too. And the new one is nice and tight now so I know for sure they did teh whole shifter and it lights up too now. In your case it would be a product defective safety issue. By law the shifter interlock must be working. And so if yours is jamming and not properly working it is defective and has to be replaced by law by KIA for safety reasons. My 2004 got in under a loop hole for the lights and looseness and not really a jam thing. The new one is the one I beat to the punch and push button too fast and jam it myself. Yours being a 2008 is for sure if you are not doing waht i am and beating it to teh release, covered under the product safety laws. Under that, all fed cert vech must have a shifter interlock that only allows the lever to go form park to any other gear position when the brake is applied. They ordered mine adn it came in and i sat for 30 mins maybe an hour? I THINK and they installed it and I was on my way. I do not seem to think yours would be much different. Mine beign a normal 4spd and yours the sport(slapstick) shifter 5spd.
