03 Sorrento, 6 cyl. How much oil does it take ? Would pouring in 6 quartz
and then topping off while measuring be a good start ?

Also, do I need any special tools to remove/replace the oil filter ?

My V6 03 sorento takes 4.4 qt. with filter. check after filling and running engine a short time. You need to remove both the metal and plastic covers below engine and just a normal small filter removing tool works. Oil pan plug is 14mm.

actually the plug should be 17mm. that's what comes stock on most kia models. if there's a 14mm on your's then it's an aftermarket plug.

Unless you got a Diesel do not. The 2004 manual i have and am reading out of said this.

Engine oil w/filter 4.3 us Qts
wo/filter 4.0 us Qts

As for tools. The drain plug on mine is small and takes a 14mm socket. And as far as I know is OEM stock. Would not even know how it could be 17MM as the hole is not that big. The (5) Splash sheild bolts take 12mm socket. And unless the last guy was a gorilla the filter should come off fairly easy by hand with a little effort. If it is very tight you might need a filter wrench. I have a adjustable band type that works well when i get one of those stubborn filters. Put it back on hand snug tight. Once it contacts the base plate snug and stops spinning freely and is seated. All it requires is a half turn more and thats it. If you wish to give it a little more that is fine. Just do not forget what goes on by hand has to come off by hand. And never use a filter wrench to put it on. Unless you plan to use the same wrench to get it off. And there is no reason for it to be that tight in the first place.

Buy a One us Gal jug as it is cheaper and then one extra qt. Pour the WHOLE gal jug in and change filter and start vech. Then shut off and top up from the QT.
If you do not change filter then just pour the gal jug in. But this is highly UNWISE.

When you remove the bottom covers, before removing the filter take a piece of plastic and drape it over the cross member. That way when the filter is removed the oil hits the foil and not the cross member. Thats what I would do before I installed the remote oil filter mount. Now it's a no mess job. I also buy just the 5 qt. jug from Wal-Mart and pour it in.

You are right many more these days are coming in 5qt jugs. Thou I would be careful of the extra over half a qt from the 5qt jug when it takes 4.3 qts. A extra .7 of a qt does not sound like much but it is. A .1-.2 extra might be fine if you top up and can not get it perfect. That would make it 4.4-4.5 in stead of 4.3. But a half a qt .5+ more then that will more then likely make the oil in pan hit the crank and froth on a reg basis. That is something you do not wish to promote. Your eng/oil pump like straight black coffee way better then a Latte.

P.S. I agree that you might do that on YOUR vech as YOU have the remote filter and its lines sucking up the extra oil not the pan. But you did not say that to the people here so they might not get that. And add 5qt to a stock vech. Yours is not.

I work at a kia dealership here in florida we were instructed by kia to put 5qts of oil in 3.5liter. Then on the 3.8 is 5.3 qts. We were just made aware that kia is having an issue on the 3.8 liter with them burning oil. They say on the New Borrego they have solved the issue with the 3.8. We havent heard anything on the v8 borrego though.

I am sorry that I was not more detailed in my post. The extra 2.5 to 3 feet of hose and the larger PH 8A style filter that I use takes the extra oil. I mounted the filter on the outside of the frame rail inside the wheel well cover in front of the tire.

Heres a few pic to explain.

The first 3 pictures are an adapter I had machined by a guy at my work. He's a magician with a lathe and milling machine. It has metric threads to match the Sorento and standard threads to match 3/4 x 16. I found the adapters I had purchased for the Sorento hit the A/C pump when spinning on. The aluminum extends the mount down 3 inches. Plenty of room for the 4th and 5th picture. The 6th picture is the inside fender support. I took the fender liner out and replaced the push in anchors with permanent nut-sert anchors.(1/4-20). I can have it off in about 5 minutes, after the tire is off of course. The 7th picture is the 4th mounted on the adapter that is attached to the filter mount. The 8th picture is the remote filter mounted to the outside frame, driver side front, just behind the fog lite opening. I used about 3 feet of 1/2" i.d. hose. 2-45's on the engine side and 2-45 barbed fittings on the remote mount.

Hummm very interesting. I just looked back over my invoices for the last year. FREE and customer pay ones where I used a Discount COUPON to get the Reg $33 service done for $24 and one a really special $16.95. They all got 4.5 qts billed out of 5w20. I assume that was from the Oil Genie hose in the ceiling. But the last time when I did not use nor have a coupon and infact upgraded now to Synth. I got charged for 5 qts of MOBIL 1 5w20 full boat price. And my MPG went down 17-18. Now this week when I did the filter and top up and I know it is just at the top of the dipstick safe zone. And I assume as it was designed to be that 4.3 qts. The MPG has gone back up 18-20. Could it be now that the 5qts were infact putting a drag as I suggested before on the crank? Gee I wonder. Also would explain the never having the oil light flicker at wierd times before on the 4.3-4.5 fills. And doing so on that last 5qt (.5 overfill) synth fill. And now has not done it in a week again. Gee I really wonder. Can the class say "no more frothing" from overfill.

BTW my vech a 3.5 never burns a drop in 3-4/3500+. And if it does it is so little it is not even noticeable on stick.

I as well drape a drop towel over the swaybar on to the front splash shield. I wonder why taking the front shield off as you said, is worth it. I only took out the rear sheilds 5 bolts and that sheild to get to the filter and it was right there in plain sight easy to get at. Do you find the extra 5 bolts and sheild to be worth much use?
