I have the same problem with my 03 Sorento. No heat when it's idleing. Brother-in-law also has 03 Sorento with the same problem. He took his in and they fixed it, but he doesn't know what they did. Hope someone out there knows. I just like to know before I take it to the dealer.

Default No heat

We also had the same problem: no heat when at idle, heat when under acceleration. I took the coolant bottle off and it has small cracks in it...allowing anitfreeze to leak out......Kia dealer quotes $95.00 and 2 weeks to get it........

My sorento is hot! :-)
I try to keep a long story short. ( I already did this on friday bot somehowe my message did not came on this thread)
A long time ago the main head office of Kia in the Netherlands sent out a message for sorento's wich got overheated. They advised to drill a little hole in the thermostat. This is what they did wit my car also last summer. They put a new thermostat (with no hole) in it last thursday and they let it run idle for 2 hours and the engine did not want to get hot, as I told before. Friday they had a meeting about this problem and sombody asked, did anybody took it for test drive and it came out that nobody did. So they took the car for a test drive and guess wat happened. The guage went to half (50%) in 13 min. So possibly there was air in the coolant system the day before. That's what they told me by phone.
Also it they figured out that the story for drilling a hole in the thermostat was ment for gasoline sorento's and not for diesel ones like I have.

Anyway I'm so happy now and untill now (sunday) the car get's hot in 12 min. driving in the city. Gauge goes almost half (50%) and stays there all the time now. Also on highway and traffic jams.

That means for me that I have a Happy Christmas already.
Thanks to everybody who tried to help me. It did realy helped me.

If sombody like to be more about this problem you can e-mail me: naarhun@hotmail.com

Happy christmas to you all.

Bert

They have, certain production date ranges are effected. Late 2005 and earlier?. Most have the hatch/slash/checkerboard marked bottom tank. If the recall was done or it is NOT effected reaching under yours and feeling if it is like above or totally smooth will be all you need to do. Smooth means upgraded reinforced tank bottm and it is not recalled.

And to BertH Happy Holidays! And glad it is fixed. Was sorta what i said in my first and last post. Not Burped (air) and bad thermo (coolent flow) even when the dealer put one in last summer and in new the other day. Dealer drilling it made it defective. Let alone Diesel and Gas issues. As well as the temp gauge at 25% after 30 mins still being a tip off to problem. When 50% constint year round after 10+ mins is normal.

I'm pretty sure mine has a cracked tank. I added nearly a gallon two days ago. now gone. Guess I'll call the STEALERSHIP.

At least my JEEP is problem free

Stealership found tank to be bad and replaced it. plenty of heat now. Why does KIA not put out a recall?

I'm having the same problems with my '04: no heat and losing coolant... Mechanic correctly identified faulty resevoir and replaced it, ($200 later...) but now engine doesn't heat up properly. I thought it might be air in the system that would work itself out in a few days, but it's been two weeks and no change.

How can you tell if there is an air lock? What can I do about it? I always figured that air and lack of coolant flow would cause an OVER-heat, rather than under-heat. If I drive at highway speed for 15 miutes and then let it idle, it heats up and the gauge shows normal, but city driving barely budges the needle.

I'm thinking I need a new thermostat, if it's stuck open or something. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Having the same issue with my 04 Serento. No heat unless I am traveling over 60mph and or idle @ 3000rpm. Otherwise ice cold air. my warranty just expired and I have 62,300 miles. After reading all the advise and posts I checked my resevoir and noticed it was low. I then removed the resevoir and noticed the small cracks on the bottom, I immediately called Carriage KIA of Gainsville, GA and they had the part for $30. It took about 20 min to replace the resevoir and fill with antifreeze. Problem solved! Thank you KIAform.com and the advise from the experts.
