Default Check Engine light on

I have a 2004 Kia Sorento with 20,400 miles on it. Last night the check engine light came on and stayed on even though the car is running fine. I referenced the owners manual and it said it is some problem in the vehicles emission control system and have it checked at the dealer. I went in and the dealer can't see the vehicle until 10/31 and so I scheduled an appointment then. The Service manager told me it is safe to drive and may either be a bad sensor or a need to reset the system because of the fuel blend change or the gas cap and how it was tightened.

Has anyone else had this problem? Should I be concerned? My only complaint about Kia is they need your car inordinately long because they don't seem to have large enough service departments nor enough trained techs. A warranty is no good if you can't get in for service. I love my Sorento but there have been some minor problems.

Wink Check your gas cap

If the gas cap is not tight or it's seal is not sealing you will get the check engine light. Now if it checks out ok then I would seek someone who understands your Sorento. This may or not be the Kia dealers service Dept.

Default Egr

Yes it happened to me and it was the emissions cannister valve had failed. The dealer had to replace it and if you'll look in your manual it states that the light indicates a problem with the emissions system.

If you don't want to wait till the end of the month take it to any good parts store and they can use a code reader to read your fault. Once you have the fault code you can look it up or bring it back here and someone can help further.

Default Engine light reset

Many cars have a procedure to use to reset the check engine light. Does anyone know how to reset the Sorento's check engine light?

That happened to me also. I have a 2003. You really have to get the gas cap good and tight. After the cap clicks 3 or more times you have to really grip the cap and give it a little more muscle. Its never happened again since I started that procedure. Hope that helps.

Default Still waiting to get service

Thanks for all the ideas. I don't think its the gas cap and suspect it is some type of emissions sensor or part. The car for the most part has run okay except one time when I tried to start it and it sputtered and stalled four times before I could start it and then it ran fine. This leads me to believe that it is emissions related and some sensor that perhaps regulates the emissions controls spasmed. It has not repeated but it scared the heck out of me. My appointment at Kia is 10/31.
