I've got an '03 sorento picked out and I'm wondering if there are any common problems with this model year that I need to keep in mind as I check-out the vehicle and make a decision.

I have an 03 with LUX package AWD model and so far it has been a very good vehicle. some of the quirky problems that have occured on many 03's has been a rear end thumping feeling. Come to a stop and then take off and you feel a thump. Try this out before you buy. There is a TSB on this to first grease the drive shaft splines and if that doesn't work they replace it. Also the center dome light may stop working in the door position because of a error in the ETM program so they add a diode, again a TSB. Ane one more thing is a leaking coolant overflow bottle. Seems that the seams on the bottom of the bottle can crack and start to leak. Have the dealer check these point out for you and see if they were ever done or ask him to do it before you buy and make sure you get some kind of warranty. good luck

if your are purchasing it from a Kia dealer ask for a copy of all kia dealer service work and warrenty work done on the vehicle (if they will give it to you) YES they have that information !
don't let them tell you they don't have it or won't give it to you, if they won't, find another vehicle, they may being try to hide something

Good point bh - my dealer was happy to give me that info, they even ran a CARFAX report on my car for me. I knew its complete history in addition to the work done on it before I ever test drove it.

Not to invade hicaffa, but the diode is already there. Occasionally they go bad and only a limited amount of people have this problem.

I own an '03 (since new), and to this date the only problem I've had is the clock problem, which has probably already been replaced if yours had the problem. Never had the diode problem, the driveline bump, or the expansion tank problem.

Some people have a problem with the brake rotors warping and headlights blowing. Again, not myself. Not to say there isn't a problem, but not everyone has them. If my Sorento was totalled tomorrow, I would buy another one.

I also own an '03. Had the tank problem: dealer fixed. Had the diode problem which caused the Karr alarm system to act up. Got the diode replaced and it worked great till it went out again. It's past warranty. Question? Can I replace it or is it buried in the dash somewhere? Thanks for the time.

The diode is easily replacable. It costs about $12 and is located inside of the vehicle around the fuse block, but you'll have to remove the trim panel.

I bought my 2003 Kia Sorento EX late, last summer with about 53,000 miles on it. I noticed a clunking in the drivetrain and took it into the dealer. Under warranty, they replaced the rear portion of the drive shaft - problem solved. From what I remember it was a problem with flanges that were loose in a coupling, and it had been redesigned to solve this problem. I'm trying to get everything I can replaced/ repaired under the 60,000 mile warranty (now at 58,700). Since last Fall items that have been replaced are: clock that quit holding the time, aforementioned drive shaft, center console lid (magnet broke out of the plastic), rear driver's side of split seat wouldn't come up and replaced, door hinges that squeaked were replaced (was told that I could put all the WD-40/ grease on them that I wanted, but the only solution was replacement -- odd), stereo control on steering wheel broke off and they told me that they replace both the stereo and cruise controls as a set (white typeface are lighter in the replacement and would have looked odd in two shades). The latest item to be replaced is the interior lights, roller switch on the dash. The plate fell out and the switch fell into the dash. I'm starting to think that the quality of the plastic in the interior is not of the highest quality. Oh, I've also replaced both low-beam headlights myself. I've decided that if they burn out again, I'm seriously thinking of trading this in on something else. Otherwise, except for the gas mileage, I like the vehicle. If only Kia would keep on replacing these items that should last the lifetime of the vehicle past the warranty.
