Can a bad or improperly installed a/c compressor damage the crankshaft pulley bolt on a 2004 sorento? 2 have sheered off after a replaced compressor a week ago

No, there are alot of issues with the crank bolts on the 3.5's. We recommend a new bolt everytime the pulley comes off (I.E Tbelt/Crank sensor repair) Since this is the 2nd time it has sheered off, I recommend a New crank gear & Pulley (harmonic balancer). Be sure whoever is installing it torque's it atleast to 140 ft lbs. Your AC compressor repair should have nothing to do with it. Hopefully the sheered off bolt comes out nice, I have done a few of them, they suck.

Crap. We replaced the whole kit yesterday and 200 miles down the road it popped again when turning on the a/c.
I had a shop change the timing belt last week and they damaged the compressor. Made me bring it back twice after leaving it all day to finish. Started to make a slight hum at low rpms with ac on. Noticed they put the old tattered and broken timing belt covers on with half of the bolts....relative in rural family town looked at it and gasped at the terrible work. Crankshaft bolt sheers leaving driveway and he kindly replaced Kia brand pulley kit and bolt as well as 2 new top timing belt covers. Stranded 250 miles from home and just had it towed back to thier door. Am I screwed?

It's really hard to say without looking at it. Whoever did the first repair may have not done a good job drilling it out. Also I'm not sure what your saying to, when saying "whole kit" there is no kit for this, there are individual parts? Make sure that the Crank gear (which has the crank dowl pin pressed in it and tone wheel) along with a new Crank Bolt (with washer) and a Crank pulley. I have replaced lots of them and have never had one come back. Like I said the AC repair had nothing to do with it, maybe it could have strained it, but even if the compressor seized up the belt would break before the big bolt. Also timing covers on the 3.5's become really brittle after some time and its best to replace all 3 covers.

I would suggest a different garage. Cyber Monday Deals Now On! 281842378998 Type in item number and look at picture. If the slotted spring pin in the sprocket is broke it will shear the bolt. If a blockage is in the air condition system the compressor will stall if the relief valve is stuck. This will put a lot of excessive pressure on the pulley and bolt. The bolt has to be tightened properly. If your drift pin is broken I would install a new OEM pin.
http://www.spirol.com/ makes pins but would be cheaper at a dealer.
http://www.ebay.com/ search 171509048340 this is a picture but I'm not sure of diameter or length.

It has been tossed around that over tightening of the belts could have an effect on the crank pulley bolt. If the mechanic is installing the belts and not using a gauge it could cause undo stress on the bolt. They should be tightened just to the point of a squeal and a hair more. Jmho and years of experience.
