'05 Kia Optima - No Fuel Filter?

I went to Autozone and bought an inline fuel filter for my Kia... and spent the next half hour under the car searching for where it goes! According to KiaTechInfo, it's under the car, right in front of the gas tank. According to a Google search, it should be right in front of the gas tank on the driver's side. I followed the line from front-to-back and found nothing. I ended up returning the fuel filter. I know there is a small strainer inside the fuel tank, attached to the fuel pump...but is this all this car has?! I find it hard to believe that there wouldn't be an inline filter somewhere under there.. My car was made March '05 by the way, if that helps.

I have an 06 and did the same thing, AutoZone has it back. I gave up, lost ball in high weeds. I keep getting the filter is in the tank, but why would they put a part that needs to replaced in such a bad spot. Sorry I wasn't much help, just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

Yeah it was so frustrating! Thank God someone replied to this thread at least. I have taken out the fuel pump and sprayed that little tea-bag looking filter with brake cleaner, but that was about the extent of it. Nothing is wrong with the car, but I figured that it would have been a good idea to replace it!

Koko, you were in the right place when you had the fuel pump assembly out. The filter is in the tank, but that little sock is only the pre-filter. When you had the pump assembly out, do you remember seeing a formed plastic shell, the part that everything else attached to? That's the filter. I's kind of a pain to disassemble the unit to get the filter out, but it seems you have the ability to do repairs on your own. Get the pump out again, take your time, you shouldn't have any problem with it. Kia part number 31911-38204 (good until production date 9/2005, after that there is a different part number.)
