I recently acquired an 04 optima 2.4l auto with 120k miles. The car runs and drives fine. No codes. Idle is about 750 rpm in drive, park and neutral. The plugs were replaced with a new set of ngk. The timing belt was recently replaced last year, about 5k miles ago. All the electronics have been tested and checked. Per the kgis solutions are to replace the coils and wires. No change. When the car is idle in drive it idles rough. I have recently added an extra ground wlre which made no change. The idle also seems rougher the colder the outside temperature gets. Any suggestions?
Sadly, this sounds like normal 2.4L idle condition. Mine does the same thing. I bought it with 100K on the odo (currently has 109K). All maintenance is up to date. When I'm at a stop (on the brakes in drive) I also get vibrations. As soon as I put it in neutral it goes away. The only thing I can figure is something with the torque converter. I know it's not the balance shafts in the engine being out of time (already dealt with that).
Hard to believe they all do this? But maybe so. I already replaced the two motor mounts as they were shot. Expensive parts but easy to replace. The dealer thinks replacing the transmission mount might help but no guarantee.

Sounds like normal to me as well. I have a 2004 2.4 Kia Optima LX and it idles roughly. I think the only time it isn't pretty rough is when it is in park. I'll have to check again when the car is work again T_T

Park and neutral are also smooth on mine, maybe something to do with the torque converter...

I owne a 2004 Kia Magentis 2.4 LX with the same rough idle issue in "Drive". You mentionned that replacing the engine transmission mount could help. Did you do it and did it solve the problem?
i disagree with the torque converter theory. If this was the case and it was unbalanced somehow, it would vibrate in every gear ( PRND ) , if it happens when cold and gets smoother as it heats up, it has something to do with heat.
My guess is the balance shaft belt has stretched out and is not in time anymore .
I can't imagine the engine vibrating has anything to do with the tranny

why would a torque converter be engaging in park or neutral? my 2.7? does the same thing and it really bothers me, but my rpms fluctuate up and down at idle, not sure why. it does not shudder in neutral or park. but mine does occasionally shudder at low speeds coasting off gas at 20-25mph. My bet is torque converter. service the transmission and get some conditioner for it. see if that helps.
