Default Mass Air Flow Sensor

I have a 2001 Magnetis LX with the 2.4L 4 cylinder. I just brought the car home from the dealer service dept. and problem was diagnosed as a worn out mass air flow sensor. New one will cost me about $900 plus installation. Anyone know if I can get a used one to install or do I need to bite the bullet and spend $1000 for a car only worth about $3000? Is it worth it to go searching for a used one?

The MAF is not actually a wearing part, so I'd have no problem buying a used one from a reliable source and preferably one that would allow returns.

Why not take it to a local parts dealer and get them to read the error codes, then post these here with a description of the symptoms and just to get a second opinion here.
