2001 Kia Optima runs fine then rough idle and dies
I have a 2001 Kia Optima 4 cyld,I recently replaced the timming belt, fuel filter and plugs, drove it approx 20 or 30 miles and it started running rough ck eng light came on and it died, ran a code ck and it stated cam position sensor circut malfuction,so I replaced the cam position sensor, drove it approx the same distance and it had rough idle and died agian, towed it home 30 minutes later fired right up runs perfect, did not set the ck engine light tho.I figure some componet is getting hot and shutting it down but how do I find it?can someone help.thanks Billy
Very often the cam position sensor error is not due to a failed sensor, but the signal is out of synch with the crank shaft position sensor, which could be due to the timing belt jumping a tooth or two.
The only puzzling part of this theory is that it ran well again after a spell of trouble, which couldn't happen if the ailment was caused by the timing belt.
Also clean the Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve, throttle body, and make sure the EGR is shutting off good.
A fouled up ISC does not trigger an error code.

will the iac or egr cause it to shut down like it is doing tho?
A malfunctioning ISC will only cause a problem with the idle speed, but if the EGR is stuck open it would cause it to run rough and die like you describe.

Hmm, good stuff ron! Wish I would have known this a month ago.. I JUST got my Optima back a few days ago from having the CSPS and the Timing Belt replaced. I was sitting on the dealership lot for over a month waiting to get serviced. Man the rental car was hella expensive, and that's WITH the 50% disc I get for working for the retal company. HAHA!
