Default Timing Belt

In my manual it states to replace the timing belt as a maintenance task at I think at 75K miles. Does this need to be done? I have 2001 Kia Optima 6 cycl.

Yup, this is one maint item that you dont want to neglect. The repair cost resulting from a failed belt will far exceed that of replacing the belt itself. A broken belt will cause head and valve damage.

My advise is to get it done.

ABSOLUTELY! Replacement interval is 60k miles. If it is not done, you run a good chance of causing THOUSANDS of dollars of damage to your engine (and KIA warranty folks will laugh at you if you try to claim it under the 100k mile warranty for original owners!).

I believe For the V6 it's 100,000 miles by the owners manual. I had mine replaced at 118,000 miles, also had the water pump changed because you
have to remove the timing belt to change the pump. you can go online at
KIA global information system and look up the shop manual. hope this helps

As everyone has mentioned it's important that you do it as soon as possible. The sooner the better. I just replaced mine (75,xxx miles) when I has to place my Crank Shaft Position Sensor. When my friend who is a mechanic shown me the belt, it had cracked and a few teeths were gone. So again, don't neglect.. do it! Otherwise the worse can and will happen. Good luck and keep us informed!

kiaguy06,
Hey, I'm new to the forum and was wondering where you're reading 100K for 6 cylinder optima. I read 60 K recomended replacement. The reason I ask is my car has 76K and I have not replaced the belt yet. I want to do so if needed but not any earlier than required. Thanks in advance, CJ

The dealer replaced mine at 60k. Cost a little under $1000 for the entire 60k service including timing belt change. I would stick to the owners manual, its there for a reason.

I have a V6 and the owners manual says replace at 60k
