Default 02 optima overheating problem

when i go to school, i get stuck in traffic and my car coolant temp starts to rise then drops down and then rises up higher then it was? i need help

sounds like a thermostat on the way out, if you do replace it, try and find one that fails in the open position; rather than failing and remaining closed and causing possible engine damage, it remains open and you will notice the car never really builds up any significant heat. I think Stant's version is called the Fail-Safe.

My '01 is doing exact same thing. Replaced Thermostat, didn't change it at all. A couple of mechanics said it may have to do w/ negative side of wiring getting old & affecting the temp gage.

What'd u find it to be??
