Default My Kia Optima is showing 5 different codes. Please help.

Hi,

My 2001 kia optima died on my while I was out driving about a week ago. Up until that point it drove great and I had recently used it to make several 500 mile trips. I finally got the codes from the check engine light and here they are:

P0300- Random Multiple cylinder misfire.
P0102- Mass airflow Circuit low input
P0335- Crankshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction
P0340- Camshaft Position Sensor

When the engine is cold i can start it right up and drive it around but when it gets up to temp then it will just shut off. If I unhook the battery and then hook it back up again then it will start again. My engine doesn't sound too good but I think that is just the cylinders misfiring.

A month or two ago this code kept showing up but i just kept clearing it and it wouldn't show up for another thousand miles or so:
P0401- EGR insufficient flow

I dont know if the EGR is related to the current problem or not because it ran fine when the EGR code was showing.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start? I have been told it may be the ECU or just the crankshaft sensor. I have a feeling if i take it anywhere then it will be a pretty expensive fix.

Thanks!
Zach

Welcome to the forum.

I would start with investigating the EGR valve - take it off and clean it with carb cleaner, and if the EGR is fouled then I'd move onto cleaning the throttle body and ISC valve also with carb cleaner - after this clear the codes and if the CEL comes on again check what codes.

For the misfire I would advise you make sure you have good NGK spark plugs installed and that they are gapped to 0.75mm (0.03") and if the misfire persists it may be time for new HT wires and coils.

When last was the timing belt changed - this should be done every 60K miles - if not due for a new timing belt check and confirm that the valve timing is spot-on.

There may well be problems with the sensors such as the MAF, crank angle, and cam shaft, but I'd first get the above done.

Believe me! It's the Crankshaft Position Sensor!

I went through this for almost 2 weeks on my 2004 Kia Optima.

Please read my thread on "YOUR STEPS TO INSTALL THE CRANK SENSOR"

I was getting all of the same codes and went crazy to get this issue fixed.

Read my thread and then let me know what you think.
