i just did it on my car. balance belt teeth cracked the sensor so the car died. mostly everything bio says holds true and his other writeup are great. he describes testing the sensor in another thread that is absolutely perfect. without his help my car would be in the junk yard. all in all its not a hard job to replace. their is a definate lack of space but i did it without lowering the motor. remove the tire and plastic oil filter guard. loosen the alt and powersteering pump and remove those belts. remove water pump pulley(this is were space is bad and lowering the motor would help but can be done without it) remove timing cover and crank pulley. sensor is above the crank sprocket and removed with 2 10mm bolts. the timing belt does not have to be moved to get it in or out. i cut the wires going to it so i wouldnt have to move the powersteering pump anymore and rerouted the wires per bio's advise. id plan on a day to remove and replace. youve got to be good at putting bolts in blind.

Thanks for the info. The job has already been done by my friend who is a professional mechanic. I wasn't about to replace the timing belt and sensor myself. NEWayz, I finally got it back a few days ago after over a month at the dealership. She's running like a champ, but I can feel that the 75,xxx miles on the engine has taken it's toll. I think some upgrades are in the mix. First is an CAI or a Ram. Not sure yet.

both times my crank sensor went the car died immediatly. the first time the whole housing of it broke off so it would never start. the second time it got cracked and pushed back pretty good but it would start and run every now and then but not for long and always ran bad. if you look you can find out how to test it yourself. its real easy to test and will tell you all you need. replacing it on the other hand is not that easy. basically your gonna do a timing belt again.

the sensor we are talking about is the crank position sensor. its located behind the timing cover on the lower part of the engine. its just above and in front of the crank pulley. lots of stuff have to come off to get to it. the wires themselves are run behind the power steering pump which has to be removed to get them in and out.

hi all.i'm new to the site and this iz my first post.my '04 2.4L optima iz dead in the water.the dealer said my timing belt has stretched and that my crank sensor needs to be replaced too.are there any threads or links showing how to do this?i'm no novice when it comes to turning a wrench, but are there any special procedures involved in doing the replacement?my plan iz to drop the engine from under the car and do the repair.what i am most concerned about are the engine internals once i have the timing cover off.what are some things to look out for?

if your car is just turning over that a good thing. as long as the timing belt just streched and didnt snap or jump a tooth i think your fine. you dont need to drop the motor to do it but it is easier. this thread is pretty good about explaining how to do it but their is another one with pics somewere. you cant really see any damage done to the car until you do the job and try to start it. you can pull the valve cover off and have a look and pull the plugs and look down their but its no guarantee. just replace it and pray that the broken crank sensor saved your motor. your gonna want to replace or remove entirely the balance belt too.

I too have replaced mine do to a belt taking out the sensor.
The counter balance belt, crank sensor, timing belt all damaged.
Replace all of them. and started up and ran fine.
Drove it two days then the speed sensor went out.
Replaced that and only other problem is a squeal from the power steering belt when it starts.
Replaced that and it still does the same.
Oh well I guess I can live with that.
