Default Speedo 9% fast - 04 magentis

My GPS says 91 km/h, speedo reading 100 km/h

So, I know now why I haven't got any speeding tickets...

Dealer service advisor gave me some b/s line that the GPS is not accurate in a car due to the metal of the vehicle..... (he's an old guy, must think GPS is a compass)... we better warn the military if he's right.

So, is Kia being crafty???.... you see, my warranty will be over at an actual 91,000km...as the odometer will read 100,000.

Or, is this something there's a fix for?

My tires are the original factory tires still.

Do I have to write friggin' letters every friggin' time I go near a car dealership... man I gotta get back to buying old beaters....I hate this constant conflict of trying to be dealt from the top of the deck.

Hey there is a previous discussion about this problem on the optima which is a rebadged magentis. I don't think there is a fix other than changing diff ratio or the speedo gear in the trans. It seems to affect both models no matter where you live.

We had about 12 replys to speedo error on Ausrtratian V6 Auto 2005s last year and I came to the conculetion that the problem was only here. In my case the Sat nav showed 64 kilometers PH at 60, 100kph 91kph 110kph 101.8 kph, at a steady 110kph [our legal hiway maxium speed] the car was showing 119.6kph.

My thoughts were maybe different size tyres? I just do not know but your right when your car shows 100,000 kilometres or or miles. You have lost a lot. In the last two years I have had a Ford focus and toyota Camry and they were both within 1 kilometre of true. All the cars here were NAVSAT the same

Kia policy speedo's minus 2% to plus 8% thats offical.so it seems not a lot you can do.

ACPO Guidelines on speeding, and the UK law regarding prosecution.
Vehicle construction and use regulations require a vehicle speedometer accuracy to be in the range of -0->+10%. The implications are that it must never under-read - for obvious reasons - but may over-read. As the cost of manufacturing a speedometer with -0% error would be very costly they all over-read by a few percent without exception. Even if speed is measured correctly the display may not be accurate, so a speedometer error is allowed. Because of this, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) have an official formula for calculating a speeding offence. It allows a leeway of 10% plus 2mph. In reality, most speed traps are triggered at higher speeds than this because if they were set bang-on those guidelines, the sheer amount of paperwork generated would overrun the police speeding departments.

My 06.5 LX W/Auto has some interesting specs after running thru a known 20 mile stretch 3 times.

The trip meters, after 20 miles, showed 19.8. Odometer seems to concur but a longer run should concur.

Running thru a 4 mile stretch on 3 occassions, the speedometer had to be run at 62-63 to finish the course in 4 minutes flat. Thus 62-63 MPH "registered" = 60 MPH.

This was done on the std. Kumho tires, less than 100 miles, with front inflation "cold" @ 33 PSI & FWIW rears @ 32 #.
