Depends on when the last time the fuel filter and wires were replaced.

WOW, 90K? That's pretty impressive.. I only have around 49K, but mine is a 2004. I just did an oil change today and asked about the tranny fluid, but was told that I actually don't need to change it.. so it's all good.. she's running strong and still fun to drive! And I gotta admit.. with the HID, she's getting the head turns and respect that wasn't really there.. W3RD! =D

I drove my old 2002 all the way to 100,000 miles. My 2004 has a tad over 50,000.

I have a theory. I 'm trying to keep my car running well for at least 3 more years. I know I have a lot of milage & perhaps that might not be possible, but now that the car is older I'm going start paying more attention to maintenance issues. 3 years fits within my scheme of things. Fuel filter was replaced at 30 grand.

Shoot..with fuel injection using such high PSI and being pretty sensitive to variations, you should change the fuel filter about every other time you think of it.

As for the plug wires..if they arn't leaking voltage, they should be OK. Run your engine when it's nice and dark...have a look under the hood and see if you see any sparks. None? Should be ok.

If you see any, chunk those wires.

If the sparks arnt from the wires, we have other issues to look at.

My car has 82,000 miles on it. I got it used with 78,000. Motor runs very strong. I think I got lucky tho, the oil is always clear, so either the motor was taken care of, or its got a newly built motor in it. I have a buddy who works at a Hyundai dealership, and stated that the 2.7 v6 motors are still kickin with over 200k miles on them. As long as you maintain the vehicle you should be able to keep the car for a long time.

The 2.7L engine has been a very solid performer with many reporting very high mileage. I have it in my wife's '02 Optima and in the new Optima. I think one of the keys to any engine's life is doing the scheduled routine maintenance including changing the timing belt. Since you purchased a Optima used, please check your dealer's records to see if it has had its timing belt changed at the manual's stated mileage and age. If not, do it now. Don't risk ruining the great engine. May you have many great years of motoring ahead of you.
