Tranny: After reading here it sounds like KIA had to make even THAT difficult with the special fluid type. I'll try AUtozone but it sounds like only the dealers carry it?
Also, I read one TSB where they say there is an EXTERNAL tranny filter that looks like it sits on the top/side of the tranny. However, it said in 01 they started phasing it out to go to the internal style.
Anyone with a 1G optima 2.5L know anything about it? Looks like it would be real easy to change if it was external.

Engine oil: How hard is the 2.5L filter to change?

thanks!

the best thing to do is have a shop do it and have them put in the recommended synthetic fluid.

This is $4 to $5 a quart, and they will need 14 quarts.

Don't do it yourself.

This is coming from a guy who PUT IN the transmission himself.

The shop has a special suction device that will suck ALL the old fluid out, and there is some type of additive they put in as well. draining the fluid yourself, you can't get to the fluid in the torque converter.

The type of fluid ABSOLUTELY makes a difference.

Two weeks ago, I replaced the original tranny that had about 125K on it. I replaced it with a used one that has 7K on it. I put in dexron III, and it ran pretty well, but there were points that it did not shift well.

So I took it to the local shop, and they did the flush service with synthetic fluid and those poor shift points have gone away.

most of the optima's doesn't have an external filter, the internal filter is just a screen and doesn't have a scheduled replacement, as far as the trans fluid it takes Kia sp-III fluid, which is the same as mitsubishi diamond 3, it is recomended that the transmission fluid be flushed every 30,000 miles it is better to use synthetic but as long as it is changed regularly sp-III is ok, as far as dextron 3 never use it, it is not compatible with the friction material of the clutch disks and cause premature failure
