Red face 2003 Kia Rio RxV 98000km idles at 2k, stalls

Bought this kia one month ago from dealership. Unknown service history. Everything seemed fine. Bought it with the check engine light on. Had the dealership change the 02 sensor. Check engine light went out, but came back on two days later. After that the light was on or off for a month.

It started to hesitate and run a little rough all of the sudden, then stalled.

In park the rpms were at 2k. If the gas pedal was pressed lightly the rpms would climb. If the gas pedal was pressed more firmly the rpms would drop, even stall.

In Drive the RPMs dropped way down, if the gas pedal was pressed firmly they would drop and the car would stall. I managed to feather the pedal and make it to the shop.

My reciept says they cleared codes:

P1121 TPS sig. fault ecm to tcm
P0717 Input s/s no sig.
P0301/p0302/p0303 cylinder misfire

They replaced spark plugs and wires and the V/C gasket (Valve cover gasket; rectangular gasket with sparkplug seals inset?)

They said the plugs were full of oil because the gasket needed replacing.

$400 bucks and the problem was fixed.

Only it wasn't. Still does the exact same thing. The Check Engine light is now off.

I know nothing about mechanics, but I've ran through all the postings on this forum and I already love you guys.

That sounds exactly like what happened to my 02 before the timing belt broke. Engine light would go on and off, she'd stall and rpm's were screwy. These engines are interference fit - If the belt breaks, your engine is going to suffer damage.

The unknown service history is the worst part.

disconnect the tps its on the back side of the throthle body. See if it runs better. And for a peace of mind I would change the water pump and timing belt

Throttle Position Sensor. Sometimes its better to remove it, its held on by 2 bolts and clean it.

since you had a P1121 TPS sig. fault ecm to tcm error. thats why I am saying to take it off and clean or unplug it. See if it runs better.

Just passed along your sage advice to the shop. My fingers are crossed. Thanks again.
