Exclamation Timing? Please HELP!

Ok, my buddy was driving down the highway the other day and ....his car just "stopped running". He said that it didn't make any noise, but since then we tried to turn it over in his driveway and it's making a horribly odd whine/weird turning over start sound... Does anybody have any idea about this?
I'm hoping it's not the timing, but idk what it could be! Please help! Any assistance is extremely appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks -R.C.

It sounds like a timing belt. Remove the covers and take a look.

Question

I didn't line up the timing marks but there were 4-5 teeth shredded off...How much damage is this going to cause?? I've seen some pics from ppl's timing belts going bad, but idk how much damage this will do. What's a good way to check & see the damage...or how much damage there is?

its more in likey the damage you see in the pictures. Only way to tell is to pull off the head. If it is what the pictures look like you well be looking around $1000 to $1500 it fix. Mite be cheaper to get a motor from the scrap yard

Just pull the plugs (damaged plug-damaged cylinder), usually only 1 or 2 cylinders are affected, sometimes it is all 4. I would just look into a used engine, figure new valves at the least 2 possibly 12 or all 16, pistons maybe 1 perhaps all 4 depending again on damage. Machining the head, Gaskets, valve stem seals, yadda yadda yadda. The machine work and parts gets expensive real fast. Then if a piston shattered the rod galled the cylinder. I've even seen cams snap. I get a lot of rio's in for engines, I pull the heads to show the customers, occasionally I put together engines with good used parts, bob weight the pistons, polish the cranks, valve job, new rings, full gasket kit, bearings, it gets cost prohibitive to really rebuild these engines.

P.S. you can remove the oil fill cap on the valve cover to see if the cams are spinning when in doubt.
