Default FINALLY a clue

2001, 90K miles, automatic trans

Ok, well beside the intermittent rough idle and misfire which seems to be associated with damp weather (I'm guessing a coil...) my other complaint has finally surfaced with something I think may be tangible.

The CEL came on with the following codes:
P1500
P0734

Now, this I believe occured when the engine was being taxed by the A/C, lights and trying to accelerate. That's at least when I first saw this light come on. IRC, I was not in 4th gear though, but was starting from a stop after coming out of reverse.

The problem I've been experiencing

The car has for quite some time been having trouble down shifting into 1st when coming to a stop. Occasionally you'll slow down to near stopping or very briefly stop and then accelerate and WHAM you suddenly find yourself slammed into 1st gear (pretty violently, almost like someone who doesn't know how to drive a manual trans, but this is an automatic) from what I think is probably 2nd.

Any ideas on how to approach this?
Thanks in advance!

P1500 is a Vehicle Speed Sensor
P0734 is a Transmission solenoid

Solenoid may be sticking from varnish buildup, are you up to date with with your trans service? Some Lubeguard or Seafoam trans addititive may free up the sticky valve. And from the shifting your transmission is doing it soundslike it has a sticking valve.

Check the leads to the VSS, test and replace as necessary

Your misfire has to do with your spark plug wires, the rio engine almost acts as a funnel to fill up one of the spark plug tubes with water, replace your wires and grease each wire end thouroughly.

I had the misfire problem, easy fix. Besure the wires are dry! Then spray with silicone spray. Ended my problem for over a year now, easy fix and cheap and works. As an afterthought if you've changed spark plugs lately be SURE they are gapped .028 to .030, closer to .028 the better. Good Luck

I had the trans flushed at 65K and did a pan drop at 46K. I'm about to get it flushed again, but even since the previous flush this problem had been occuring.

Seafoam makes a trans additive??

Where is the VSS? On top of the torq converter? (VSS means vehicle speed sensor right?)

I just changed the plugs and wires about 3 months ago. The problem continuted with brand new wires. though I didn't lube the actual wires, just the plugs and inside of the wires. I will get some silicone spray at the parts store.

Check that plug gap. Most plugs are pregaped at .040. A wider gap makes it harder for the spark to jump the gap putting an extra load on the coil.

No, the sensor that is mounted near the radiator fan is the crank position sensor the VSS is on the top rear (firewall) side of the transmission.

Yes Seafoam makes an Automatic Transmission additive, I've seen some good results from it, if this does not remedy the problem then the valve body may need to be removed, cleaned and replace any solenoids that test bad.

Now IF the VSS code P1500 is present, change your VSS first, and drive the car, if your VSS has been failing then it would cause erratic shifting, because the computer would not be ordering the solenoids to select the proper gear changes. Change your VSS, clear all OBD II codes, add the seafoam, and drive the car a few days, then pull your freeze frame data, and check for dtc's.

I suggest Autolite Platinum plugs, most ATV, Marine, 4X4 stores sell a moisture repellant for ignition systems, WD40 will work in a pinch. Spray some on your wires, and in the spark plug tubes, this should reduce P0301-P0304 misfire codes

I'd stick with NGK Iridium # BKR6EIX, whatever stay away from bosh.

Bosch super has to be the worst plug made, I don't like Bosch Platinums as I've lost too many of their center electrodes on turbo applications. Beru silverstone is a good plug. The Iridiums are kind of a waste in an application such as the rio. I use Autolite in my shops (my default plug), project cars, off road, in my boat. What sold me on Autolite was my off road 2 cycle bikes I used Denso, NGK, etc, and the plugs would die out, so I always had to carry a spare, one day I tried Autolite, I never had an autolite die on me, the plugs would last and last, I pulled one out of my Suzuki and it had worn the center electrode down to its insulator. Two cycles are much, much harder on plugs than the four cycle in most automobiles. Most members of the Subaru 360 club run Autolites now. It really is the best value for the dollar going in my mind.

By the way most people already know to gap their plugs.
