Exclamation Kia customer service not really customer service

I bought my kia in May of 2001. I was 22 and this was my first car I bought completely on my own. I was "sold" on the car because of the outstanding warranty. I left that day with my brand new silver kia rio with visions of high gas mileage and a worry free 10 or 100,000 mile warranty. The car was my baby, there were nver any real service issues with the car, except an empty fuel light thath never goes away. Until about a month ago. The alternator went bad and had to be replaced. Two days later the check engine light came on and the car started acting really funny, it was almost like a hiccup while i eas driving and the when the car would idle, the engine would die. I took it to a certified kia shop, the same place i bought the car, and told them the problem. Three days later and $300 later I was told i needed a new computer, an ECU to be exact. I asked if that was covered under warranty and it is. 8 years or 80,000 miles i was 1197 overthe 80. Called Kia COrp and was tossed around it and toldit was a goodwill claim they were not obligated to fufill, it was over warranty. The new computer was $450 grand total so far $750. Now I understand that rules are rules, but for a company to sell their cars to people who are under the impression that a they always try tomake good on their warranties. It is very disheartening that Kia would want to shun a potential new car buyer, the way I was treated by the customer service reps was horrible. I never even got to speak with anyone handling my case. I am so saddened that this is the way Kia customer service and warranty issues are handled

I think you were hosed.. If your Rio is covered up a 10/100 warranty that usually covers running gear/drivetrain. Well the engine is drive train and the ECM controls the engine, therefore is would be drivetrain would you not think?

ecu is not part of the drive train. it is an electronic component. dpowertrain warranty covers hardparts of the engine that is directly conneccted to the engine. the ecu is only coverend under the basic waranty

Boy I'm glad texkiatech is not a wrench in my area, ECU aka ECM's in all cars must carry a 8/80 mile warranty since it is considered an emission control device just like catalytic converters, that is a federal law. Airbag modules, Transmission modules, etc are covered by basic warranty. Daisy I'm really sorry to hear what happened to you, I would NEVER buy a ECU from the dealer, plenty for sale at the junkyard/dismantlers/ebay. I wonder if the tech who changed your alternator might have mistakenly crossed the battery terminals by mistake, even just a nanosecond might have damaged the ECU. Also with the advent of OBDII (all cars & most light trucks 96&up) any good shop with a good scanner(snapon, SPX Genesis, etc) can work on virtually any car. As an aside, you are right in the critical range for timing belt failure, has your belt been replaced?
