Unhappy Horrible Radio Reception

I searched through the forums here, and didn't see anything else along these lines, so after about 18 months of horrible radio reception, I am going to ask for help.

Both AM and FM radio come in very poorly no matter how far the antenna is extended. So poorly, that my FM transmitter for my iPod can barely work inside the car with static and interruption.

Is there anything I can check to make sure the antenna is actually connected to the radio and is helping at all? Or anything else I can do (fuel maybe?) that would make sure I am actually receiving a signal?

The CD player works fine.

Default Process of elimination

I would use the following process:
1. Verify ant cable is corrected connected to radio
2. Disconnect existing ant cable and then connect new ant & cable
3. If no resolve with 1 or 2 only other option is to replace the radio

Thanks.

Right along those lines 10 minutes, I decided to pull the radio and check to see if the antenna was even connected. Sure enough, it wasn't. After forcefully getting enough slack on the antenna cord (which means there was no way in hell it was ever connected since it was manufactured), I plugged it in and I am getting my favorite Los Angeles AM radio station in San Diego now (150 miles away).
