My Check Engine Light Comes On Aswell When I Take The Car Up TO 5000 Revs In Fifth Gear . . . I Read On A Website Somewhere That It's Because Of The Emissions Don't Know Wether This Is True Or What But Hasn't Affected My Rio's Performance Or Anything So Once It Goes Off It's Sound For Me . . .
Your car is absolutely OBDII compliant, every car since 1996 is, the company is just trying to worm their way out. Can you return it? I got my scanner from Harbor Freight for $35 and it works great.
As for your problem, I actually had the exact same thing happen after I drove through a huge puddle too fast a week ago, the scan reported that it was the MAF sensor, I think the splash let water get sucked into the intake and messed up the sensor, I reset the light and it has never come back on. If you can't do it yourself, Autozone should at least be able to tell you the code for free.

i am now having trouble starting the car. it starts but splutters and cuts out. once its running its fine but just after starting it is a real pain. please help
Check the condition of the boots on your spark plug wires. If the rubber seal that mates around the circular embossing around each plug hole no longer seals properly, water gets down inside the spark plug tube and grounds out the cylinder. I just changed mine, and I
have no problems now. Originals from the dealer are only $55.00, cheaper than any aftermarket parts stores. Also, go to Autozone for a free reset of your computer, there is
absolutely nothing wrong with your car, and the light will go out.
