Default Grinding noise under harsh braking?

I have just got a 51 Rio, everything is fine on it bar an issue with the brakes. When I brake normally, the car slows down as you would expect, but the moment you put that little bit extra pressure on the brake pedal a grinding noise occurs and the car brakes with less than half the force of when it did before the grinding noise if that makes sense?

The grinding comes in at a definite point too, i.e. the grinding doesn't fade in the harder I push the brakes...I'll apply the brakes with increasing pressure, I'll be braking fine fine fine, then suddenly they'll start grinding.

Before I start pulling everything apart, is this a common issue? Anyone heard of it before? ABS Issue??

Thanks in advance!

That's a very old car

It sounds like the brake pads are worn and possibly the brake disks/rotors as well.

51 in the UK is the registration mark of a 2001 Rio lol, sorry, didn't have my 'international head' on!

Cheers....it's just that the braking is perfectly smooth up until the point where you would expect the ABS to kick in, and then it suddenly goes all grindy. I'll take a look at the pads and discs now.

Just had the front wheels off, disks are fine, pads are thick still, just got one rear wheel off before it started belting down with rain so will check the rears tomorrow...although it really didn't feel like a rear issue, you can feel the grinding through the pedal really badly.

Sometimes rust can cause the grinding noise. But it should have gone away after a few breaking applications.(so most likely not your problem)
Take the Pads completely out and check to make sure no rocks are logged in there too. (clean them up a little, theres a grove down the pad make sure theres nothing in there)
Make sure to check the back breaks (but if you think its the front, chances are its the front)

I've seen this happen even with pads that are still quite thick, due to the ridge on the disk reaching the same thickness that was still left on the pads.

Sounds like the rear brakes to me.
