Can you help a newbie solve a few problems
Am about to proceed with what I expect will be installation of third blower speed control switch and want to get to bottom of problem rather than repeat fix/fail cycle I have already experienced.
Had blower speed control probs before but not blowing at posn 4 only, like I have read about in several posts on here. Mine would blow air at all four positions but ONLY if I manually push blower speed control nob inwards 1/4 inch. If you let go it pushes back out (to its normal position) and you can select any position but the blower doesnt run. No other problems with the system originally. I have even taped the blower speed nob in sometimes with elec tape in the winter rather than drive with my right hand pushing nob in. No doubt this will make things worse.
I pulled dash facia off until I could get at and remove control housing and found two things. Wires to blower speed switch housing clearly overheated and burnt, and housing of switch assy had melted and mishaped at two points where shell and guts are held together by two little bits of hooked/bent plastic. The melt and subsequent movement allowed by the melt was letting the unit guts move around and so I only made electrical contact to get blower operation when I pushed it inward and made electrical connection.
I cleaned up burnt wire, cut back etc to remove damaged plastic (only an inch of damage visible the rest looked fine. Bought new switch housing and installed. All back together, all working perfectly.
One month later. Exact same symptoms so I think I have melted another one. This time though, rear defrost indicator light on temp control panel shows on and will not turn off but rear defrost is not actually defrosting. Defrost on/off indicator clicks as though its selecting on or off but light is on all the time. I have a hunch the hot wires in that region caused this problem as well.
Right now, as long as I push blower speed control in, AC, Heat and blower all work in all locations as normal and as selected but rear defrost does not work at all despite showing on at indicator.
I havent pulled it apart again yet but expect to find melted switch housing again and expect to replace bits again, but can anyone identify what the cause of the heat/melt is before I sacrifice more parts for the sake of a months worth of normal operation.
I have looked a the Kia Tech site and although there is useful info, I cannot find anything that tells me what my REAL problem is and I think this is just a symptom of the real problem.
Any words of wisdom to get me started down the right track?
I also have a generic code for IAT Sensor High Temp reading High 1 but car seems to be running beautifully. I have cleared code and monitored and it keeps coming back. Pending code and subsequent check engine light only register when car is at normal operating temp. OBD2 shows fuel at stage one being adapted by reducing fuel input by 0.6 percent and fuel being added by 6.25 percent when car is at fuel stage 2 which I believe is full temp. Car sat idle for four months and ran very rough at first when re-used but I put in new plugs, oil, filters and some injector fuel treatment and its now steady at idle, quiet, running well at all speeds and pulling like crazy?
Sorry if this seems like a lot but figured you might have some experience and could get me looking in the right locations.
