Default Transmission problem with Rio, any ideas?

I have an issue with a 2002 Rio. It has about 170,000 miles. While driving it made no noise but acted like it was in neutral. The check engine light is on. We turned the car off and then restarted and it drove a few miles and then did it again. Once again turned it off and on and it made it to our destination. Now it just will not move at all. There were no trans leaks, fluid is full and does not smell burned.
We have a universal code reader but it seems to have a different plug so we could not check the codes. It is stranded for now so we can't have the codes pulled.
Any ideas where to start? Would this type of situation be connected to the code? I'd hate to think torque converter etc.....

Yes, it is an automatic and I can cycle through the gears but nothing happens.
It just acts like it is neutral.

Thanks

the OBD2 connectors is just above the gas pedal. it is NOT the one under the hood by the fusebox.

sounds like another fine rio auto trans failure.

I have not been able to do many searches, but is this a common issue? Are the Transmissions bad in this car?

a lot of people have had problems with the automatics
Kias use a standard connecter (OBD2) for diagnostics, like sportage4x4 said "the OBD2 connectors is just above the gas pedal. it is NOT the one under the hood by the fusebox."

sounds like there some kind of linkage problem if its shifting but nothings ingaging

your best beat is to just take it into the Kia Dealer
automatic tranys are just a pain to do anything with

Have you ever seen a problem like this with a transmission that had anything to do with a check engine code?
Do you think there will be a fixable code that will make it drive?

Best to get the codes read and hopefully this will be a guide to what is wrong.

I had complete loss of drive once and found the torque converter seal went and I lost all fluid - this is obviously not your problem.

It could be a one or more of a multitude of things, like a bad range switch, etc.
The transmission controller (TCM) communicates with the ECM and the ECM displays the CEL and stores the codes for reading off the OBDII connector.

O.k,
We managed to get the codes pulled from the car, there were 5 of them.
P0732 A/T Gear 2 Improper Ratio.
P0733 A/T Gear 3 Improper Ratio.
P0734 A/T Gear 4 Improper Ratio.
p0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit
P1500 No Vehicle Speed Signal to TCM

Any idea which one to start with or if this is common issue???
What does this tell you????

I would start by tracking down the P1500 (no speed signal to the TCM) because this could trigger the other codes as well.
