Oooooh....not fun. Been there. You have to try and reach into the hole where lock was and release the little lever that stops the door handles function. I used needle nose pliers and some bent hanger wires to finally jiggle mine loose. Realize that the door lock cylinder simply has a cam and short rod that attach to the main mechanism. I think lifting that little lever is what did it (can't recall exactly). The lock/unlock rod you pull inside attaches to this same mechanism, but if you try to pull the handle before you have released the lock rod, it gets really stiff and hard to unlock at that point.
It wasn't fun, but I eventually got it open...then got the door apart and fixed everything.
