Default Transmission Won't Shift??

I was just given a Kia Rio 2001, the transmission won't shift? I put the key to on, push on the brake, then push in the button on the shifter. The shifter moves but the tranny won't shift out of Park? I disconnected the cable at the tranny and attempted to shift it, with no luck? Does the engine have to be running to shift it? Are you able to shift these into Neutral with no electrical power (dead battery)??

So, you can actually move the shifter from park to reverse/neutral/drive, but the transmission doesn't seem to actually respond? You tried moving it manually AT the trans, correct, with the cable disconnected? How did it feel- could you feel individual detents as the internal selector moved from position to position?

If yes to all the above... you could have a bad connection and the solenoids aren't engaging, possibly that portion on the ecu (or the tcu if it has that) has gone bad... Go get a free estimate!! Most tranny shops around here give free estimates.

Let us know what you find. Maybe it'll help one of us down the road
