I have a 02 Rio & my check engine light keeps coming on. I have been told by the dealer that it's a loose gas cap code(EVAP). I have been into the dealer about 5 times for this same problem when the car was new. I have been educated on the art of installing a gas cap. They have replaced the gas cap 2X and told me to be careful not to over fill the tank when fueling up. I have not filled the tank since then (keep it just below full)and always click the cap 3 or more times. The light still comes on and then goes off a few days later.

Update
The car is currently in the shop (light is on & it needs an inspection) and a rep says there are 3 codes in it: low evap, high evap and the third one he says is because I must have filled the tank while the car was on. I informed the rep that I never fill the tank with the car running. He told me that the code may have been triggered if the power was on when I was refueling. (radio on while refueling) Is this for real? Will the light go on if you fill the tank while the car is on? Is this BS? AAARG! I just want the light to come on when there is something really wrong. Is there a way to disable the gascap/evap sensor? They have to keep the car overnight because the light is still on & I guess the tech has to drive it to complete the inspection process or something like that.
I would love more than anything to pick up the car tomorrow with the light off and have the tech tell me some sensor was bad and now its fixed. Somehow I think I'm gonna get another lesson on screwing the gas cap on. : (

Any Ideas?

I picked the car up last night and once again I got a lesson on screwing on the gas cap. The rep told me that they had to put just about 100 miles on the car because the light would not reset. Was my car a taxi for a day or is that legit? In any case now I have to fill up the tank and that will probably turn the light on again. One last thing...once in a while when I accelerate from a stop the rpms jump up between 1st & 2nd gear. This causes the car to slam into 2nd gear. (it really blasts you back in your seat) This happens at various times and the dealer told me that they didn't feel any shifting problems but it's documented. Is that a characteristic on the Rio transmission?

It lasted two tanks of gas before the light came on. I was driving about 20 mph & the tank was at 1/4 full and the light came on. Any ideas?

I've had my Rio for 8 months, purchased brand new, and the check engine light has went off 7 times. I've had the same gas cap shpeil.

The 6th time, I was really upset when went into the dealership to get it fixed. They where nice people, but I think they uplugged the check engine light to satisfy me. So when my free oil/filter change came around, braught it in, a few weeks later, hit the highway, check engine light's on again. Braught it back again, it's been a few months no check engine light. Im thinking they unplugged it again.

Clearly it's a car with really cheap parts that just consistently break, i have forever learned my lesson.

It seems the one thing a Kia owner might do that can cause the check engine light to pop on is replace the gas cap and then commit the most wicked of all sins in the process...clicking it less than 3 times! If you have clicked the cap a minimum of 3 times (3 times being good, over achievers might do four or five clicks, if you continue on for more than 8 clicks, this is a sign of anxiety or possibly frustration - which many of us Kia onwers suffer from), you have not sinned and your Kia mechanic will be happy.

Otherwise, the Kia gods are fickle and just like to torment us. The Rio's check engine light is the black plague of 00's. Most of us have had if pop on often enough we no longer take it very seriously unless there smoke. Even then, I need to see a burning bush or fleeing animals to call someone on my cell. My check engine light has been on constantly for 6 weeks now...ever since my previous engine blew up and needed to be replaced with my new engine.

Funny, it would have been nice had the check engine light went on BEFORE my previous engine blew...but having it on continuously now that I have a new engine is almost as comforting.

As your car is new I would continue to follow your dealer mechanic's advice. I would also check into your state's "lemon" laws to see if any might be applicable. I have no idea how they work or if they would apply to this sort of thing, but I'd do darn near anything to get my old Toyota back.

Good luck,

Trollboy
