could you fill out your profile?
It is not for you, as you know what you drive and where you are, but it is for us to be able to tell what the problem is and not ask everytime what you drive...
cars differ with regions and equipment.

Plus, age (in distance) and maintenance record are crucial here to eliminate possible causes.

It could be easily fuel pump, or spark plugs, or dozens of others issues.

Are you getting any trouble codes? DTC's? (check engine light on) if so, what are your codes. Its always good to rule out maintenance.. Plugs, wires, Filters etc.. If those are all good and you have no trouble codes, I'd suggest taking out your front o2 sensor (right off the manifold) and see if it improves, it is possible to have a plugged converter.

Wedge your accelerator so it ticks over about 800-1000rpm and remove spark plug caps one at a time to see if one or two cylinders are not working correctly . When each one is removed it should give the same effect . if no effect then coil, plugs. valves or rings for those cylinders. .
Welcome to kia forums if you go to top right of page User CP you can update your profile.

thanks guys for the quick responses , i'm not mechanically minded but i was told the error code pointed to a camshaft sensor , it was not .

done a smoke test whatever that was and it wasn't that either .

timing belt was done just under a year ago , car passed a roadworthy test about a year ago as well

98 thousand on the clock and the engine light stays on all the time

If the cam sensor has already been replaced, and the timing is on (and has been verified) it is possible you have a issue with the Crank position sensor. I have also seen the half/moon tone wheels on the end of cam get loose. Be sure your using a OEM sensor as well.

If the "check engine" light is on...Then there are diagnostic codes stored that may be of help...
Search the RIO area of these forums for posts from panmike...I believe he had problems similar to yours
and it came down to a bad "purge valve" causing a vacuum in the gas/petrol supply and fuel starvation...

Back pressure from a plugged exhaust can/will cause your symptoms also...have the exhaust checked for less than 3PSI at the primary O2 sensor "bung hole" when the engine is operated at 3000 RPM... If it is higher than that the exhaust is plugged causing the engine to "breathe" poorly....

The primary wiring connections on the coil packs have been known to disintegrate making connections to the coil packs very intermittent...

How old are the spark plugs.... Misfiring plugs (P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304) will also cause loss of power...

A test of compression of all four cylinders will give a good indication of the "health" of the engine.... The readings of a good engine will be 185PSI...Lower readings (90~120PSI) may indicate internal problems...

THIS. If exhaust cant get out it will run like crap under a load. There are other stories in this forum of clogged converters. You may be the newest member of that club.
