Hi, I have a 2004 Kia Rio Cinco with 140k but well maintained. I am having some hesitation starting out in 1st and 2nd gear most days, but mostly drives smooth in 3,4 and 5th gear and at cruising speed. Seems better or worse at different times but not able to denote a pattern. I have also had check engine light go on and off with a p1166 code as well. Any sense of best things to diagnose, clean or replace first...Wonder about IACvalve, but really does idle fine, or other vaccum leak or MAF sensor/meter. Thoughts, suggestions appreciated.
Thanks, Rick
Your in the right place p01166 code is lamBda bank control limit bank one. Chechnya fuel system air intake leaks. Psvand fuel line leakage. Exhaust leaks and exhast leaks.and coil packs or faulty surge tank valve and Intake port. Any other codes?
No other codes...I've heard of most of what you list...but not surge tank valve. Will look for vacuum leaks first. What about Mass Air Flow Sensor, clean/test/replace?
I think ronjohn meant purge valve which is on passenger side on firewall on my 2002 Rio. Has an electrical control with connector attached and hose to gas tank and one to intake manifold panmike
Mike was looking at troubleshooting from my 02 book for p1166 code. Don't need a new keyboard just a smaller thumb for my phone. Clean the maf with maf cleaner or electronic cleaner NOT carb cleaner.
May or may not be a silly question...I see two parts listed as PCV valve...one attaches to a wire and is push in and one is screw in (no wire). I imagine these are both different parts for my 2004 kia rio, like is one a valve and one something else, selanoid?...Which one or both are more likely related to the P1166 code and should either or both be replaced (or cleaned?). I will look for vacuum leaks and likely clean the MAF sensor too. Thanks, Rick
Hi rick. Pcv is the one on the camshaft cover for vacuum I would think the psv is the one with the electrical connector for venting hydrocarbons back into the intake to be burned if im thinking correctly. I only know 02 stuff the 04 is different than mine also my pcv is not threaded .
Hi, Rickame. I believe ronjohn is correct, but my 2002 kia rio has a threaded pcv positive crankcase ventilation valve, but I know my old Mazda was not threaded. The photo on the left in your post is the PCV valve. You can remove them and clean with a good degreaser and put them back in and continue to use them. They can cause sluggish acceleration from stop to start, and sometimes poor idle. I think the other valve may be a purge valve for gas tank. panmike
totally confused now. the above picture on the left is listed as purge solenoid or purge valve or purge control valve in different listings and it does have an electric connector. the picture on the right is listed as pcv (what does it stand for?). really just wanted to know which or if maybe both could be related to my hesitation and p1166code issue. thoughts?
Hi, rickame. here is a statement you made.......one is screw in (no wire)..... this one, the screw in is the PCV, Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve, gases can only go one way, and this must be clean or can cause idle, and initial acceleration problems. I don't know if it would cause a P1166 code or not. The other valve is solenoid controlled with an electrical connector and is called a Purge Valve, to purge the gas tank and lines. Hope you are less confused now. Good luck, panmike
Panmike...just saw your note after I posted...thanks for clarifying silly abbreviations. so I'll take a look at the valve with the thread and no electric connector. Is that pvc valve on the right or the left of the crankcase in your kia?
Hi rickame i had a brain laspe yes my PCV has threads i was working on my 96 geo metro and got them confused. Mike is right with his thinking the purge controll valve should be electrically actuated sorry for the confusion. p1166 is a catalist or fuel problen from my 02 book best of luck
Thanks much mike and john...now last silly question. Can you tell me how to locate the pcv valve (one with threads on a 2004 kia rio. I think I want to check that first, and maybe clean or replace. Actually my car runs pretty good once it gets going but sometimes still hesitates in 1st n 2nd gear. I see lots of pictures for its location on other kias but not the rio. Almost there, help appreciated or link to a pic if that is possible. Thanks.
Take the black kia cover off the valve cover. Look on the right side just behind the plug wires there will be 2 hoses the first one is the pcv threaded into the cover. Best of luck
Well got the PCV cleaned and hesitation problem seemed a little better but not all better it seems to me. I'd still like to clean the MAF sensor as that could be the culprit. Can I get to this from the air intake hose or do I have to take the air filter assembly on top of to get at it. Thanks again, forum here has been great.
