What should be the compression reading for cylinders 1 through 4 in a 2002 Kia Rio? Thanks. PanMike

Mike...
I answered your email on this subject...

For others to read...

180~195 really great...
165~170 worn but OK
If the balance between cylinders is under 5~10PSI you are OK...If they are quite different then the car won't idle well and misfires may happen...

Have the mechanic checking the car do both a "WET" and DRY" compression check...
Wet is when you add a couple of spoonfuls of motor oil into the spark plug hole... If the compression comes up then you have worn piston rings...If not you have either valve seating or head gasket problems...
Because you know the head was off the engine and work was done on it (probably valves) the so called mechanic may have not "lapped" or seated the replacement valves..(just installed them and reassembled the head)...The engine WILL run but not well because the cylinders will leak the compressed gases and the engine horse power will drop...

2002 Kia Rio Compression?

Hi, Dave. Yes, I know you answered my e-mail. Thank you. I decided it is great info and should be on the forum for others to see/use if necessary. I appreciate writing it again for forum folks. :) Your 2 month old friend PanMike.

Hi, Dave, and all. A mechanic came to the house with his compression tester, and the compression for cylinders 1 through 3 was 175, and cylinder 4 was 165. So, it is o.k. according to master mechanic Dave in his previous post on this subject. The mechanic suggested something strange to me. He said next time I drive it, turn off the A/C and go up the small hill in front of my house and see how it climbs the hill. Wow, what a difference. I think I have FINALLY found my original problem of would not go up small hills with power. It acts as if it has a new motor when the A/C is turned off. So, it must be the A/C compressor putting one heck of a drag on the motor. That is next thing to look into. :) PanMike
