to say im extremely pee'd off is an understatement
when i bought it, they said "everything works, blah blah blah.......", well, unsuprisingly, not everything works!!!!!!!! how people can be so deceitful i dont know, i bought it in July, hence not needing it until now, as i thought i would try a bit of off roading before we get any serious snow, only ventured about 5 ft off the road, and got stuck, put it into 4wd and thought "this is strange" next thing i knew, stuck, head out window, no front wheel movement whichever way i steered (i used to work on a farm so yes i do know how to dry off road, )
right, as i have no owners manual, or any manual at all, what COULD be the problem?
never had any doubts about the gearbox as its always gone into gear properly, so im hoping that isnt knackered, what is the set up? could it be the actual 4wd lever not engaging? hubs?
is there anyway to test things before taking apart?
some transmission pics would be helpful if possible to see whats what like
re: frustration, we've all been there when the 4x4 is not working at the time you wanted or needed is most.
re: fix, see Galf's excellent writeup on removing & inspecting the front vacuum hubs, if you want to go that route, otherwise - would recommend replacing w/ Warn Manual locking hubs..
re: Testing, if you want to check the front diff shaft before installing, you will need to securely lift the Sporty by the frame points at all 4 corners to check rotation of the drive shaft. Best to have tested on a professional shop lift.
(Running the Warn Manual hubs here, zero problems w/ 4x4 since installing them.)

If you decide to fit WARN manual hubs, the system of use is as follows;-
The Warn hubs have a locating dail on the outside of the hub, so if you wish to engage 4x4, you will need to get out of the vehicle " go to the front wheels and turn the dial to lock(engage). This will then lock the wheel hubs onto the front drive shafts.
When you get back in the vehicle you then select the 4x4 high or low as normal on the selecter. This gives you full 4x4, once you are clear and do not need 4x4 you then select normal 2WD useing the selecter gear inside the vahicle. NOW This is important to know, and there is alot of contriversy over this issue.
1) if you don't need to use the 4x4, then you should get out and unlock the front warn hubs by turning to unlock.
2) I have read many posts about this and some leave the HUBS locked permently and use the selector gear inside as normal to select 4x4, by doing this your fuel consumption will go up, and MAY cause expensive damage to you transmission unit. Personally i would unlock the hubs at the front, and just re-lock them again if i need full 4x4.
But to answer you question in straight terms.. You use the 4x4 selector inside as normal.

Ok, then you may have the warn auto-lock hubs then, those I am not familiar with. (I've read about them over on the 4x4wire forum, but I've never seen them.)
re: how does it work, here on the US model Sporty, when the weather's bad, I do this:
Get out of the vehicle, change the front manual hubs from the "Free" position to the "Locked" position, each side..
Get in the vehicle, switch the 4x4 selector lever from (2H) to (4H).
Watch the "4x4" light come on the dash, she's good to go.

When done, I do this:
Get out of the vehicle, change the front manual hubs from the "Locked" position to the "Free" position, each side..
Get in the vehicle, switch the 4x4 selector lever from (4H) to (2H).
Pull forward about 10 feet or so, watch the "4x4" light go out on the dash, she's back in 2x4 mode.

If I -know- the weather's going to be bad, like when I am getting out of work, I will lock the hubs in as soon as I get there, so I don't have to mess with it in the dark / lousy weather. If my wife is taking the Sporty to work, we just leave it in 4x4 mode, she only works a few miles from the house, I take care of the details the next day..
