Default crankshaft position sensor location?

my kia often will crank but not fire if i keep trying it will eventually fire. I got a code once for crankshaft position sensor. I took it to a shop they had it not start once and mentioned the same code but wanted to have it happen again with tools hooked up to it. They had the car for almost a week and it never failed to start. in the three round trips ive driven it after that i think it started right up 2 times no start but start shortly after 3 times and this afternoon I kept trying for like 10 minutes until it finally fired.

I think I want to buy the crankshaft position sensor and replace it myself since it seems fairly cheap. Can anyone help me locate this, do I need any special tools, do I need to remove anything to get to it?

It is located on the drivers side of the transmission bellhousing. It is retained by one 10millimeter bolt. All the exhaust is on that side. I recommend you do this when it is cold.

You will probably have trouble to reach its connector too; I think you have to remove the trans pan, which is one piece with the dipstick. It would be a good occasion for replacing the trans oil and filter. But are you sure that the crankshaft position sensor is out order? Often you get a code for a sensor but it is due to some other issue.

no i'm not sure its bad but for $30 and doing it myself i was gonna take a try at it. Any other ideas on what it could be. Today it fired right up when i was backing it in to my garage, then when I was parking it back out side it would crank and crank and keep on cranking and like 10 minutes later of trying over and over it just went as soon as i turned the key
