Exclamation 98 sportage, no power when accelerating. missing/sputtering

i just bought a 98 sportage, it has no power. if you floor it it will sputter then speed up? it dont want to pull hills unless you stomp on it. it will run 75-80 mph but very poorly. uses lots of gas. the guy i bought it from said it was the cam position sensor, but the engine lite is on. i changed the cps, with one from my 2001 sportage, no change but, dont know it was good? i bought it wrecked? any ideals?

ynothd...
We would be glad to help but need more info from you.
First the mileage on the car really helps..
Have you checked for codes and if so what are they..
The cam (or crank)position sensor if not operational will keep the ECM from allowing spark and will shut off the fuel pump...so...I don't think that's your problem.
There are quite a few current posts on 98,99,2000 Sportages in the Sportage section of these forums... I'd highly recommend that you read them to get ideas on what may be wrong with yours. We currently have one poster in the process of rebuilding his engine and has posted pictures.
Give us some info we'll do our best to help...
Dave

I would be more than happy to assist in diagnosing the issue with the caveat that your skill level and willpower are up to the task.....

With th mileage you have on the car I'd suggest looking at the first catalytic converter.
Recent posts for similar year Sportages having poor performance and higher than normal gas usage came down to plugged first cat. If you remove the first O2 sensor and read the back pressure in the exhaust it should be 1lb psi higher pressure 2~3~4lbs usually indicates one of the cats is plugged (usually first one off the engine).
Something to look at...

ok, i took it to autozone today. after changing the cam sensor, and it still shows that the cam sensor is bad. mabey a broken wire in the cam sensor harness? oh the milage is 135000. but did notice something strange today, NO power going forward at takeoff BUT, in reverse it backs right up? and like i said once it gets going u can mash it to the floor and away ya go. but ya need to keep it reved up pretty good like in passing gear for 65-75 mph

Is the transmission slipping in low? Is the timing correct? What condition are the plugs and wires? Are there any vacuum leaks?

More often than not, the error code for the cam sensor, is a result of a timing belt that's jumped a tooth or two, and not the sensor itself that bad.

The lack of power would also point to a possible timing belt issue.

For service info register (free) with KiaTechInfo and click on 'Shop' on the left, and for elect schematics click on 'ETM'.

Quality and not quantity counts.
