Welcome to the forum.

What's the service record on the vehicle, when last was the filters changed, when last was the spark plugs changed, what plugs used and what gap.

Seeing as the check engine light came on, get the error codes read and post them here, or research them on the KiaTech web site (see my sig for link).

I'd be checking the plugs first.

PS. How about filling in your profile detail.

For service info register (free) with KiaTechInfo and click on 'Shop' on the left, and for elect schematics click on 'ETM'.

Quality and not quantity counts.

I would use the OEM NGK plugs gapped to 0.028 ~ 0.030" , and get the codes dread free at AutoZone.

Probably it depends on the spark plug wires, check them, especially their resistance.

Default 02 Kia sportage code

Today found a code in sportage P1121,already changed cooling water temp sensor and plugs, wires, still when cold starts for a second then floods itself badly almost impossible to get started.Once started it runs rough for a few minutes ,as it warms up it gets better and when temp reaches midway on gauge its good to go,takes off and runs fine, then when cools down, same all over again.Any help would be appreciated.

That code is related to the throttle position sensor. You can find how to inspect it in the KIA web site kiatechinfo.com under SPORTAGE(AL) >2002 > G 2.0 DOHC > Fuel System > Engine Control System > Throttle Position Sensor > Repair procedures.
