Default Evaporative System Monitor and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Monitor - not ready

Hey, this is my second post of the day!

Last week I decided to connect the OBD2 reader just to see if everything was fine (I will need to smog the car in a couple months). My check engine light was off, and has been off for almost half a year (yeee!). But for my surprise, the reader pulled a code anyways, a P0440, evaporative emission control system malfunction. I deleted the code, and decided to wait to see if the code would come back before following the kiatechinfo instructions for this code. The next day, after driving around 30 miles, I checked the codes again. The CEL was off and there were no codes stored, but the reader could not check the Evaporative System Monitor and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Monitor. The reader said that both systems were not ready and that I had to drive the car longer. Fair enough. I drove around 800 miles during the holiday (you guys have to check Mammoth Lakes in California and the Sonora Pass, it is awsome). However, the same problem persists. CEL off, no codes, but the Evaporative System Monitor and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Monitor are not ready.

Now that the problem has been stated, let's go for the questions!

Why in hell the systems are not ready?
What should I test?
Could this be a problem for the smog test?

Thanks for the help and patience!

Hopefully this helps

1997 Sportage Drive Cycle

Not sure why the systems aren't ready, but you may try this to get it to complete. As far as smog, they probably run the drive cycle to get any pertinent issues to pop up. My Caravan never showed the CEL before I smogged it and the smog center got it to come up with an EGR code that had to fixed before certifying it.

I hope you're ok with that one not ready, because I changed my computer and drove over to Manteca (Bass Pro Shops) and back and I have the same issue. No CEL but the same system hasn't checked yet.
Rather than running a code reader, I got a usb interface and hook up my netbook with a OBD freeware program.

I believe that you are allowed 1. Will let you know next week.

If any of the OBD self tests (ready monitors) do not clear, the test will not continue regardless of drive cycle.

You must first find and rectify the evap system monitor system, most times a poorly sealing gas cap.
What was the specific code??

Thank you for all your replies.
Two systems/monitors are still not checking, the Evaporative System Monitor and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Monitor. The P0440 code had not come back, and no other codes are present. I did not try the drive cycle that Pacosworld suggested, should I try it?
Upyourkia, how did your smog test go? I am curious about the usb interface. Where did you find an ALDL/USB cable?
Aquanaut20, welcome and thank you for your input. My gas cap seems to work fine, but since it is not so expensive I might try to replace it. Would a bad gas cap make the systems not ready?

Thank you,

Dididavis

The gas cap is an essential part of the EVAP system, it has a pressure relief valve built in (gets dust inside the valve seat and leaks) , and a rubber seal. The least you should do is have it tested.

If the EVAP test does not complete the ECU/CPM will stall and will not complete any other Monitor (self test) functions.

I had the same problem but didn't know much about the EVAP test and went ahead with everything connected with it. I just blew it and it's still in the shop.

Sorry, didn't see the question to me. Well, haven't had time to get it checked. Trying to sell my 97 4dr 4wd. I will try and find out what the allowance is. I got the usb interface cable off ebay. Their software wouldn't load but it works with other free and purchased software.

Keep us posted and I'll try and find out about the not ready state/allowance.

Thansk UPYOURKIA, that will be a very useful information.

I did not know that my gas tank was leaking when I created this post. Maybe the leak is causing the problem with the EVAP readiness, not the gas cap. Anyways, I need to fix the tank before looking at other things.

Are you selling you Sportage? My brother is looking for a 4wd, but he is not so excited about a Sportage due to all the problems that I had with mine. But I will tell him though.

my 2001 sportage is telling me that my cat monitor, evap monitor, and o2 monitors won,t complete test cycle, before i drove it it coded for no coolant temp from ecu to tcm, i cleared it but it runs so badly i havent driven it for more than a block so i don't know if it will recode or not, checked the sensor, and it seems ok, any ideas?
