could be possible that the latch can't move freely enough causing it not to latch when you try to close it. this is what happened on my sportage. i sprayed some white lithium grease in the latch, pulled the release cable a couple times, and shut it a few times to allow the grease to get into all parts of the latch. it's never had a problem since. you're actually supposed to lubricate the latches every 6 months.

Mine won't close by hand no matter how hard I push it. I've lubed it too. The only way I can get it closed is to bump it hard with my hip.

sounds like the latch is just wearing out. i have to give mine a good shove or it won't latch. i don't have to slam it. i just have to give it a shove and it closes every time.
